If Avatar wins, there's no point in crying about it.
I will accept it if Basterds wins, and I found that movie to be very hit and miss.

Hey why's the title gone back to '09 when it's the 2010 Oscars?

Avatar definitely has a chance with history showing that a good box office has been a key to winning the big one.

Have only seen it and D9 which i hope wins a few awards so i cant really say whether it deserves to take it.

My money's on District 9 winning at least a few Oscars. Probably my favourite movie of the year. It deserves it.
I don't think I can think of another year of the Academy Awards that has so many potential winners. I might actually watch it this time!

I'll probably watch the last half hour or hour of it. That's when the best actor, director and movie are announced. Other than that, I don't care.

Gotta tell ya ... now that I think about it, I think 2010 is more appropriate.

The entire competition occurs in 2010 -- the films are nominated in 2010, voting occurs in 2010, lobbying occurs in 2010, and the awards ceremony occurs in 2010. The movies were released to the public in 2009 -- but not entered in the competition until 2010. The competition begins at nomination, and ends with awards ... all of which is encapsulated in 2010. Eligibility for the competition simply requires a 2009 release.

The fact that the Oscars itself calls it the 2010 Academy Awards seems to indicate that 2010 is right.

Actually, the formal name is The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 82nd Awards. No year, probably because people tend to be confused when it comes to annual dating. Simply put, this is the awards show for films that were released in 2009, period.

The reason it takes place in the following calendar year is because it is logistically impossible to hold the awards ceremony within 1 week of the cut-off date for qualification (which is always December 25).

So the real title is wrong ... but it needs to be wrong to pander to the easily-confused average joe? That's a pretty tortured explanation. What if the "2009" people are the confused ones?

Occam's razor ... I think its supposed to be 2010.

That would certainly be helpful ... though I'm not giving up on the Fight Club thing. I didn't see it until after 2000 -- that really should be enough to qualify.

Thats true but there still the 2010 nominations and Oscars as they have always gone by the year the awards are on not when the films were released.
