Okay, I gotta chime in. George Lucas has always said that he was "inspired" by classics like Akira Kirosawa's "Fortress", the old movie theater serials, Flash Gordon, and other things like that he had seen as a child growing up in suburban California. I don't think using inspiration you get from things you enjoy as "ripping it off" or anything like that. Steven Spielberg took his inspiration from much of the same things Lucas did from interviews I've seen and read about Spielberg. These two guys will always be my two favorite creators of things I love, like the very original and imaginative universes of both Star Wars and Indiana Jones. It is true that many things use influences and ideas and concepts from movies, books, TV shows, etc. It is VERY hard nowadays to find anything...at all....that has not been done before many times over and over. Star Wars and Indiana Jones have both had a HUGE positive influence on my life.
