Ahh, okay, cuz I saw your postings in the ALIEN thread so I was starting to fear a beloved series of films was built on lies. Phew, now I can go back to just knowing Barry Bonds' story is built on lies :)

What do you think Star Wars and Indiana Jones are?

True, Speilberg and Lucas were notorious thieves back in the day. Republic Pictures Serials, Flash Gordon, etc. The actual scene in ROTLA where Indy was chased by a huge boulder was a direct rip off from a scene in a black and white film. I've seen it... it is not original.

Well I understand sampling of ideas and concepts. What I was trying to say was, I was getting the impression that Aliens was nearly an exact copy of a previous film with only minor details really changed, now I understand better.

Very few Movies are totaly original, most of them just put a new spin on old ideas, it's more how the ideas are used then the idea its self.

Altough I don't know how intenchanle the parales to Them! was, the Flame throwers and translucent eggs were hold overs from the frist film.

not to say Camron didn't take eliments as a nod.

Nothing is original.Everything has been sampled and reworked and redone. We've been doing the this same sh%# for thousands of years, and that my friend is the truth.

Okay, I gotta chime in. George Lucas has always said that he was "inspired" by classics like Akira Kirosawa's "Fortress", the old movie theater serials, Flash Gordon, and other things like that he had seen as a child growing up in suburban California. I don't think using inspiration you get from things you enjoy as "ripping it off" or anything like that. Steven Spielberg took his inspiration from much of the same things Lucas did from interviews I've seen and read about Spielberg. These two guys will always be my two favorite creators of things I love, like the very original and imaginative universes of both Star Wars and Indiana Jones. It is true that many things use influences and ideas and concepts from movies, books, TV shows, etc. It is VERY hard nowadays to find anything...at all....that has not been done before many times over and over. Star Wars and Indiana Jones have both had a HUGE positive influence on my life. :D

It's one thing to be inspired by and another to blatantly rip-off. I'm watching The Mummy right now and it's definitely a Raiders rip-off. Raiders-lite... Raiders VERY lite.

absolutely correct, the film makers of the 70's and 80's were infulinced by by movies from the 30's, 40's and 50's, and the cycle contiues today.

just look at video games, there are countles games that rip o.....er....barrow from classic movies, Aliens being on of them.

and speaking of Flash Gordon has anyone seen the new serise on sci-fi? it's pretty good.

You lost all credibility when you said the new Flash Gordon was good.

I haven't seen the new Sci-Fi Channel Flash Gordon...yet. We got a lot of a DVD of the series premiere at work at Best Buy last week. Along with that we got a new "Saviour Of The Universe" DVD for Flash Gordon from 1980 starring...Sam Jones?! Yeah, they finally put that on DVD. Looks like the best thing about that cheezy movie is comic book artist Alex Ross's awesome painted artwork on the DVD box! :D

I agree that the Mummy movies do literally rip off Indy movies in some ways. But I own both of the Mummy movies and just enjoy them, and not really take them seriously at all. They're just fun movies to watch for the action and special FX. I hear that they're working on a Mummy 3 without Rachel Weiz now. She won't be coming back it. Oh well.

Cool! James Cameron is one of my top favorite directors! Here's the movies I love that he's made so far (in the order of my most favorite at the top):

1.) ALIENS

2.) Terminator 2

3.) Terminator

4.) True Lies

5.) The Abyss

6.) Titanic

Happy Birthday James! :happybday :fest :D

I'm looking forward to his new movie, Avatar, that he's working on now. I hear that Sigourney Weaver is in it too! Awesome!

Yeah, I tend to try and forget Pirahna 2! I've seen it. Very cheezy. Definitely not one of Cameron's best even though it was one of his first.

I got "hooked up" with Apone & Vasquez. :D

Can you spot the Mini's ? ;)
