Also, what's the BEST scene in Avatar 2?

Everyone seems to have enjoyed it but I don't hear a real excitement about the film. It's kind of "yeah I liked it... Next" review. People 'talked' about Maverick -- like specific scenes that rocked -- but here most people point out the same flaws and are either put off by them or tolerate them for the larger experience. What Avatar scenes rocked?
Wor-Gar just threw down the TGM gauntlet you super cat fans have been dutifully challenged lol

I dunno about rocked, but Neytiri had some kickass moments. She was by far the most fun to watch in the action scenes.

Anytime Neytiri draws her bow and they do that big close up of her face I do kind of almost wet my pants just a little.

Also, I’ve just realized Cameron has kind of gone full circle all the way back to the flying fish film.

Well for me I enjoyed the movie so much I don't want to spoil it so I'm trying to refrain from getting too specific, even with spoiler tags since I know a lot of people just click on them and read them anyway.

Maverick still reigns supreme for me so I'm not going to be able to say "well such and such scene in Avatar matched or exceeded Mav and Rooster commandeering the F-14" or what have you.

I do have my pet scenes in AWOW that I'm particularly looking forward to revisiting (the event that kicks off the main battle at the end is certainly a doozy as is the entire sequence itself) but one thing about AWOW is that it's so visually astounding from beginning to end that it doesn't have the elevated degrees of "money shots" that many other films of this type have. It's a three hour money shot, lol.

And yes as others have said Neytiri in action does indeed rock in this one. But there are also a good number of character moments that play out in extremely satisfying fashion IMO.

I heard Neytiri was barely in it though?
She is very much in it, she just doesn’t get a lot to do other than cry, scream and fight (and in that order). I was staggered by it, there were so many times I was expecting her to be the focus of a scene but it was Jake instead. I hope they fix this in the next one, just kill off Jake and it will be her.

Super Pocahontas spending the whole movie popping out kids and standing by her man. How did THIS movie get made in 2022. :lol I guess James Cameron really can do whatever he wants, lol.

Yeah, Jake isn't that charismatic of a hero character. And his vibe seems more often at odds with Neytiri's than in the first movie. Even when they agree, Neytiri remains apprehensive and continues questioning things after the decision is made. Not in an annoying way, more in a "why are they even together?" way. The "strength in family" angle fails to land because it's Jake making those speeches and Neytiri going along with it.

Be cool if they dropped the human element altogether. No military, no Jake. Just Na'vi doing Na'vi stuff with Na'vi drama. Spider can stay though, he's fun.

And he does still talk about that film, he talked about it on The Empire Podcast a few days ago, he just doesn’t consider it his film, it was taken away from him.

From that to Terminator.

...to ALIENS!

....to The Abyss!!! (which I find to be where he reached his peak of mastery in filmmaking - blocking, framing, acting, etc)

The theme of fatherhood is definitely center stage as opposed to being a good husband. Jake is shown to clearly have difficulty juggling multiple responsibilities at once and I believe that that's intentional. I actually enjoyed that aspect, it showed Jake to be flawed and made Neytiri more sympathetic as well. Everybody was pretty one note in the first film (though in a traditionally archetypical kind of way) and I really like how they fleshed out into more full fledged characters this time around, Quaritch included. I definitely didn't see that twist during the hostage situation coming.

I do admit that those who criticized the first movie for nobody remembering the characters' names are going to have more fodder for that with this one.

Even after spending three hours with Jake's kids I walked out remembering "Brother 1, Brother 2, Adopted Daughter, Little Girl, and Spider," lol.

Soft disagree about Abyss. I adore that film until the last act then it becomes a bit of a wet mess (in either version).

Hard agree. I thought Worthington was terrific and really showed all sides of being a dad and a leader exceptionally well. Never really liked him before. Maybe he should just do CG films from now on.

My kids really loved it when the Aussie whaling douche lost his arm. They squealed with delight. I don’t think they had ever seen something like that in a film before.
