My kids really loved it when the Aussie whaling ****** lost his arm. They squealed with delight. I don’t think they had ever seen something like that in a film before.
Yeah that was pretty sweet.

I also let out a "damn..." when

Jake buried his axe in the one human soldier's face.

Some random favorite moments SPOILERS:

Reintroduction to the villains - the new tech, performances, even the exposition was fun.

Ava-Quaritch discovering his own corpse.

Low-key, anti-Rey intro to a Chosen One type.

Explanation of the advantage of four fingers.
"How do the other guys look?"
"Worse."

New approach to bonding with your banshee.

Imagery & function of the scuba-fish.

Entire climactic battle - totally different than part one & unlike anything I can recall.

Zero Effs whale vs. boat.

Fisherman is disarmed.

Beast-mode Neytiri. I was honestly scared of her. She did some **** that would make Legolas jealous.

"Can you live with it knowing I'm out there?"
"Yeah, let's get it over with."

She did indeed!

Working on these newfangled spoiler tags for my post....so old.....

Also Weaver's entire perfornance was wonderful. I did not know anything going in and it took me a minute to figure it out but once I did I was totally charmed by it.

Also, what's the BEST scene in Avatar 2?

Everyone seems to have enjoyed it but I don't hear a real excitement about the film. It's kind of "yeah I liked it... Next" review. People 'talked' about Maverick -- like specific scenes that rocked -- but here most people point out the same flaws and are either put off by them or tolerate them for the larger experience. What Avatar scenes rocked?
TGM > A2
It's no contest for me. I've already watched TGM more times than I'll watch A2 in my life (as much as a I enjoyed it).
You're completely right about the energy difference between the movies.

Absolutely. And how has this woman not aged since 2009? They could have made that freaking Blomkamp ALIENS sequel 10 times over since then! :gah:

I also got a kick out the kids making fun of the idea or her and Norm getting it on, lol. It's funny, when they released that group shot of the young cast a couple years back they all looked like a bunch of kids that I wanted to watch get punched in the face but ended up finding the portrayal of their respective characters to be very endearing. Even the little girl who could have been the most annoying was a lot of fun. "I'm tied up again?" lol

Yes. She doesn’t sound much like a teen but she really behaves like one. Not sure how many kids Cameron has now, I think it’s a few but you have to give him credit, the kids are all really well defined and they behave like real kids, not the typical smarmy movie kids.

I’m not going to disagree with that but the running times alone mean I will probably watch TGM more. I love both but they are completely different films.

I must admit I'm pretty shocked that not only did I find this film to be surprisingly apolitical but it even ended up being less political than the first one! I say that because I always took the line about the humans embarking on a "shock and awe" campaign to be a direct dig at Bush with regard to Iraq. But Cameron somehow even avoided the low hanging fruit of inserting an anti-Trumpism or two so kudos to him for that.

Sure it had it's heavy handed anti-whaling type messages and what have you but nothing that I saw to be distinctly "left vs. right."

And not one single scene of the menfolk just standing in awe of a woman kicking ass like we've seen multiple times in the new SW flicks. The women did kick ass, spectacularly so even, but as Reese would have said it's simply because they were "good fighters"--just like the men.

The guy literally has done it all from food table, gofer all the way to the top.

Yep. He exploded exponentially from 1981- 1989 in terms of abilities and technique... very similar to the growth you see from Spielberg from Duel to Sugarland Express to Jaws to Close Encounters. There's just massive growth. It becomes more subtle in the years after.

Got out of a matinee for this a little bit ago.

It was ok. The good parts were really good but there was so much filler in the middle that the novelty of the SFX and 3D wore off before the big finale started. By the time the credits started rolling I was out, I didn't even care if there were any credits scenes.

There was a couple sitting in front of me with a little girl that was probably 5 or 6 and she sat through the whole thing without making a peep. I was impressed.

On a side note I thought that the smaller assault rifles wielded by Jake and the other Na'vi in this one seemed very similar in appearance to the pulse rifles in ALIENS and were much cooler than the big gun he carried in the previous film.

$134,000,000 domestic weekend.
$350,900,000 international.
$484,900,000 worldwide.

A nice haul but far below the likes of NWH and EG. And I'm sure the runtime and "been there done that" will cut into repeat viewings.

Hopefully that means it makes a healthy enough profit to keep going with the series but not so much that there has to be this big backlash against it. Underperforming compared to recent blockbusters might even light a nice fire under Cameron with regard to future installments.

Don't think there is any standout "scenes."

All the stuff people are mentioning here are "moments" and that might be the real problem with this film, there's no scenes that build and pay off.

There's no emotional depth to anything. It's all surface. That's probably why I couldn't give a crap about any of the characters. Jake and Netyiri are basically legacy characters and they have nothing on offer but surface level emotions based on that immediate incident. There's no residue/baggage/struggles from their lives from the first film - or at any point in their lives. It's all sunshine and rainbows until the sky people turn up again, then it's just reactive performances/actions to the moment.

TGM, worked so well because of the backstory. Maverick himself had layers, depth, struggles, demons, and most importantly an emotional arc that paid off in the end.

Even as I'm writing this it makes perfect sense - this movie is nothing more than a roller coaster. There's nothing more to connect with that leaves you thinking, reflecting, or wanting more. It is really quite vapid the more I think about it.
