I don't know what to think. At first I was against Heath Ledger playing the Joker, but now I couldn't think of anyone else as him. So I'll give Billy Bob the benefit of the doubt.

Heath Ledger is the ONLY Joker!!!!!! I Hope no one EVER re-casts that part again!!!!!!

I'm giving this and Billy Bob a chance. Who knows, it may turn out better than Freddy vs. Jason or any of the final Nightmare movies. We'll just have to see!

Don't know if you were intending to be funny, but that's been the best response so far. I think that is what many people are going to say. For me, my reaction was sitting in silent disbelief and shock. I had no reaction. I was too stunned and perplexed. After ten seconds, that wore off, and I just started laughing at the monitor.

While this has disaster written all over it, I remember two years saying "Heath Ledger? Really???", and we all know how that turned out. So I'm willing to give some benefit of the doubt, but I'm not holding my breath on a good performance either.

I think Billy Bob will do fine in the role. He's a bit old now, but guy can act and he can be a sick *******.

I'm not sure what to this about this. Robert will be the only Freddy to me but I'm willing to give this a chance. Its going to happen regardless if we want it to or not. We'll just have to wait and see. Lets hope for the best.

at first i thought this was going to suck, but then I grabbed a paper bag, breathed it and out and I calmed down, and thought maybe we should wait and see on this one. Thornton is a good actor, maybe he'll do it justice. It can't be any worse than Freddy's Dead, or a New Nightmare.

Same here. Although I really don't think anyone could EVER replace Englund, I'm willing to give Thornton a chance.

Billy Bob Thornton seems perfect for the role of a creepy child molester/killer. They'll need to stick with the more serious tone of the first movie though. I don't see Billy Bob pulling off the stand-up comic Freddy from the later ones.

I am down to see what Billy Bob can do with this role. They can never recreate what they had with Englund in the original and we can always watch the Original to get our Freddy fix. But I am interested to see what Billy Bob has to offer as FREDDY. I mean he is a freaking awesome actor. I think we all just might be pleasantly surprised. JMO Mike

Englund pretty much made Freddy his own, it will be difficult for someone to take the place of him, not impossible, but difficult.

An unknown may have been a better choice.

I like Billy Bob. A lot. He's a very good actor, imo.

I'm not sure why some people think this is a bad idea. If you'd known about the casting of Robert Englund as a supernatural psycho killer ahead of time, would you have said "Brilliant!"?

I guess for me it's that I can't get Bad Santa out of my head. I'm willing to entertain the notion that he'll pull a Ledger on us, but the role of Freddy really should have gone to an unknown so that the focus is on the character and audiences aren't distracted by a big name actor in the role.

The first NOES was the only good one in my opinion, with or without Englund. It's not like Englund is a great actor. He made a bunch of sequels that were awful and dramatically changed the character from the first movie. It was more the character/script that made the first movie so good. I really think you would have had to experience the first movie when it originally came out to recognize that. We hadn't had a new iconic horror character for a while and he was actually pretty scary. Having said that, I think Billy Bob is a much better actor and if they go back to the Freddy character from the original movie (not the sequels) it could be really good.

Who cares? I'm done with Hollywood rehases. I'll stick to the originals and be perfectly happy with that.

There's something to be said of this opinion. RZ's Halloween was thoroughly unexciting. I can't really think of a Billy Bob movie I liked other than Sling Blade, and that was a while back.

To me the big issues are "why remake it?" and "why is Billy Bob Thornton doing this?"

He's a great actor and this is a step down for him.

But I think it's funny that people are acting as the casting is a step down from Robert "The Mangler" Englund.

and that's coming from somebody that owns all the "Nightmare" movies on DVD.

I personally think you could do "remakes" of "Nightmare" and "Friday" without actually remaking them. They could do sorta like "Shaft" did, do the same basic idea as the first films but actually acknowledge it as a later event in the same reality as the previous films. That's essentially a re-hash but still, you can't tell me you'd have to jump through a bunch of hoops writing-wise to get a bunch of teenagers onto Elm Street for Freddy to terrorize or a bunch of kids to Crystal Lake for Jason to slaughter and you don't even have to hit the "reset" button.
