Save that crap for Batman or other superheroes. Superman is a boy scout and above all this. He should never be made into some dark, humorless character unless its an Else World story....which this is not!

Heck this Supes was more of an ass than Hancock.:lol

Come to think of it, it's IS an interesting avenue to explore. It would be good as a "what if" kind of story: What if Clark's parents were terrible? There was that limited series a few years back called "The Nail" where they explore a scenario where the Kents DON'T find Kal El.
Love the Nail and Another Nail. Alan Davis is the best.

*waits for someone to give this post a very serious responding to indeed*

And don't forget about Smallville Pa Kent.

He's a racist that drives around in a Confederate flag drinking moonshine.
LOL!

No offense Lu, but I think you're missing the point. As Ma Kent always says, Hopeman doesn't own anyone anything!

With the parental advice he received, it's not too hard to see how Superman turned into a deranged killer IMO. And that's. . .OK. I've come to accept that a certain fanbase wants the "dark and gritty" Superman with weird neuroses, sexual hangups, love for brutal violence, etc.

You gonna get it now!

:lol

:lol

:rotfl

I remember making the same observation about Ma Kent seeing Clark way up on the horizon and walking out to him - he couldn't even meet her halfway? :lol

Old lady Kent was in great shape in STM unlike her meth counterpart in MOS.

I swear I saw a crack pipe in the background. :lol

Yeah, in the end it's like he died for nothing.

:lol

"Superman isn't good or special because he's an alien who crashes on Earth and ends up being incredibly powerful. He's special because after all that he becomes someone who always does the right thing because he was raised by a couple of decent people from Kansas. That's it."

Oops, does killing myself in front of my family count as being a decent father . :lol

These last two paragraphs make a great point. Great read.

As for his simplistic morality, the rebuttal to that is a simple one: Captain America is pretty much the literal definition of a Boy Scout, and he's the guy at the center of two of the very best Marvel movies so far.

To make a good Superman story, you have to embrace a few unpopular notions about what makes good superhero stories: Dark doesn't always mean better or more complex; fighting for good because it's the right thing to do is a compelling enough reason; and heroes' powers aren't their most important aspect (but certainly don't be afraid to show them off).

Great article! Thanks for posting, Riddick!

I liked this quote:

He is someone with the power to be the most selfish being in all of existence, and he decides to be selfless because he was raised by a couple of kindly farmers. And the beautiful idea behind him is that we don't need to be bulletproof to be that way — we just have to be decent people.

Cavill isn't wrong though, he explained exactly why people think Batman is better.
People do not think much about such things, if we are completely honest here.
But yeah, today's society is too egocentric and cynical to even try to understand Superman's character.
Batman is much easier, especially because he's mostly portrayed as a brooding ass****.

Here's the thing though--people shouldn't have to spend a lot of time thinking about/critiquing a Superman movie. If the filmmakers do their jobs right, this should naturally flow from the film and affect people at a gut level. Though I might quibble about the part where Superman is different because he tries to understand his enemies (Batman actually does more of that than anyone else, sympathizing with them to such an extent that he puts them in a mental hospital instead of a jail most of the time), of course Superman's Kansas upbringing has become the key in understanding why he is who he is. And so I agree with the sentiment behind that article. Superman: the Movie is flawed in many ways from a modern filmmaking point of view. But it sure shines in that area. You know good and well why Superman is who he is, even if the film doesn't beat you over the head with it. With the Snyderverse, they try to get post-modern and creative, with Pa telling Clark to let kids drown, his mother telling him that he doesn't owe anyone ****, etc., with some larger, more abstract argument about him doing good in the long run. But that's the wrong way to go about it because it doesn't resonate with much of anybody, and doesn't facilitate the basic narrative that should be at play here.

I already don't buy into Batman going after Superman just because Wayne tower came down and killed all his employees.

BW is intelligent enough to just hear Superman out and easily comprehend that Superman saved 4.5 billion people.

His distrust is going to come off very artificial if BW isn't capable of seeing the bigger picture right away.

Nope, we will have to sit thru a silly artificial conflict first before WW swoops and uses her lasso to set things straight.

WB should replace the senator with Trump. :lol

Well said. This is my only gripe with this movie. Batman is smart. That along with his money is his superpower. He is always 4 steps ahead of everybody. Sure, Bruce saw the destruction of Metropolis from the street level and saw Gods destroying the city in their battle. But Batman would have seen also that Zod threatened the entire planet if Kal El didn't turn himself in. Superman did turn himself over to Zod, then saved the entire planet by taking out Zod and the other Kryptonians. Casualties happened because Superman cannot be everywhere at once and cannot fight Zod while saving people. Batman would have studied what happened and saw that Superman saved the planet from annihilation. Batman is a big picture guy and for me, having this be the reason he wants to take Superman out seems weak. I am truly hoping that there is another reason for Batman and Superman to fight. Sure, Batman would always think of a way to take him out and use it IF he thought Superman was going to be a threat. But right now, all he has to go on is a lot of Metropolis got destroyed because Zod tried to destroy it and Superman stopped him. Seems like a weak reason for Batman deciding Superman must be taken out.
