You probably know by now that i was pretty much into Snyder's approach of the universe since MAN OF STEEL, that i liked a lot, even if i recognize it's huge flaws. Never been a reader of the comics (save for some big ones like Birthright DKR year one), so i dont have any preconception of the characters and i fully embraced what i call Snyder's "heavy metal magazine" take (even if its probably a take that was already there in some comics that i have not read).
Im good to go with the dead serious take.
I like how he, Chris Terio, and many other are building the JLA universe on screen.
I liked a lot BvS but i don't love it, like i love MAN OF STEEL.
Wich is weird because BvS is clearly a better movie than MOS.
The writing is better, the story is engaging, its smart, sometimes moving even.
BUT one big thing was missing for me, one big thing that made me follow Zach Snyder since DOTD.
His style.
I was hoping with BvS to find what i love in Zack Snyder, the over stylized, iconic, ultra choreographed, operatic style that reached its peak in WATCHMEN. I was not expecting this overstylized non stop thing like he did in Sucker Punch but when needed.
And sometimes he delivered, like the beautiful (lie) opening, or with Superman saving the world montage.
But most of the time it was cool but didnt feel as good as it usually is when Snyder really prep, storyboard all his shot.
I know its impossible for such big movies, the director has to be everywhere and has to trust his second unit, the previz guys and all his team.
So i was ok with most of the movie, its a more naturalistic style, Its mostly editing work and the story building up was cool and this style works great for what is being told on screen, some kind of superheroic thriller drama.
But what a disappointment when the big action start for the climax...
Supes vs Bat is quite cool, it has the good dosage between iconic, stylized and roughness.
But Doomsday...
The fight is uninteresting, its dark, lightening bolts everywhere, flames you cant really see who is doing what (im exaggerating here of course), i mean i know what's going on, i like what going on but cant see really.
Gone the ultra clear clean readable fights of his previous movies and sadly nothing comes close to the battle of Smallville or Supes vs Zod, wich are for me the best super hero fight ever put on screen period.
So even if i loved a lot of the movie, that it will be one of my favorite super hero flicks and that im so there for JLA im a bit dissapointed.
I will see it again tho tommorrow, the movie has a lot to offer and to enjoy and its worth a second screening.
Oh one thing on Lex, he's exactly what yu expect from Eisenberg and what yu saw in the trailer and as Irishjedi said yu will love hating him but i would have done without the little things that basically show you that the guy is crazy, the muscular twitches and crazy eyes were a bit too much and what a bad idea after seeing him iconised, crowned in the final sequence to see him screaming like a lunatic trought the prison bars, snot included. Dunno felt like he was a worthy of a more cold, menacing, evil ending.
About Batman/Punisher.
He doesnt kill overtly, i mean when he's on one on one fights, he destroy the guys but dont shoot them, stab them to death. But when he crashes a car on another car on purpose or shoots from above well yeah people are clearly killed.
There is one great nod to Miller DKR, the M60 thing, and he could really shoot to kill at point blank but choose another way that is in the end basically as effective but still he doesnt shoot to kil lol
