I feel like I cant be defending aspects of fun in comic book movies because deadpool is at some ridiculous percent on rottentomatoes and I found that movie to be not much more exciting than wolverine origins.

I think you can have an "iffy" character die and make them cooler through their death, like Boromir or Gorman for instance. I think after all the controversy surrounding Clark the best way to actually *make* him that beloved character finally just might have been to kill him.

But what if he returns as the villain? If he does, it just proves the haters right...he is a problem.

if you're going to give a pass to things like the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man or Maleficent turning into a dragon which had no foreshadowing of any kind until they just appeared out of thin air.

But those weren't different characters? Those were transformations of characters that were already established in those stories. DD in BVS is an experiment gone wrong, and the character has no real connection to the plot...except that he was made by Luthor. Stay Puft was Gozer and the dragon was Maleficent...if I remember correctly. Still, you're right about the look of the character, that's one of the major factors as to why I think he was a bad choice.

Interesting idea. I'm not familiar enough with DC to know who Metallo is but depending on his design that could have been really cool to upgrade a secondary bad guy who'd been a constant in the film and already had a chip on his shoulder against both heroes prior to becoming enhanced.
.

Think of a Terminator, a guy who looks normal, but once he loses the skin, he literally looks like an Endo skeleton, and he's powered by a Kryptonite rock that he keeps inside his chest, but when he wants to use it as a weapon, he opens his chest and uses the rock as weapon.

He's had several origin stories, but my favorite was from the animated series. Long story short, he's a prisoner who gets sick with an incurable disease and Lex offers to help him, so they transplant his brain into the endo skeleton, which gives him invulnerability, super strength and super speed, but he can't feel, smell, or taste anything...he doesn't even need to eat, which drives him a little crazy because it's like he's already dead. Eventually, he finds out that Luthor was poisoning his food in prison and his illness was no accident, it was all part of Luthor's plan to make him into a weapon to kill Superman.

I would change the story in the film, so instead of the guy losing his legs, his injuries are much worse and Luthor "tricks" him into making him normal looking and also giving him an opportunity to be strong enough to kill superman, but he doesn't tell him the truth, which is that he's no longer human. Still, he still hates Superman and wants to kill him.

Excellent aricle! :clap

I'm really surprised at the amount of seemingly smart people that just aren't "getting" huge aspects of this movie. Like Peter David. He goes off about how Superman is this detached "god" that we can't relate to or like. That when he sat in the Capital building it was "as a god annoyed with the stupidity of mortals." I think it's pretty shocking how out of touch he is with what was being presented on screen. Are certain folks like him (not individuals here, I literally am talking about these high profile figures weighing in on the movie) just turning off their brains and connecting dots at random?

He isn't a god at all, in fact I'd probably argue that he's the *least* godlike of all live-action Supermen. Because just being indestructible doesn't make you divine. Hell we might as well call Wolverine or Captain Man from Henry Danger "gods" then. To me a god figure needs to have an unshakable moral code, a sense of purpose and idealism far above mortal men that coincides with his "powers." Cavill Supes doesn't have that. In fact I'd even argue that Evans Cap is a more apt "Christ figure" (especially in The First Avenger) than Cavill.

Cavill is a guy just trying to do what's right with a set of plays that no one can run but him and he's trying to practice it all under intense trial-by-fire circumstances and fierce scrutiny. When he sat in the burning Capital all I saw was a good guy going "****, I am so freaking in over my head here, I'm dealing with evil that I haven't even acknowledged exists yet..." and that really rattled him. Would Steve Rogers have sat there? Of course not, because he's got his Messiah **** together. But Supes isn't there yet. He needs help and experience and a little bit of faith and I think we can all relate to that on some level.

I honestly predict that this film will rise from its own ashes and be appreciated more and more as time goes on.

Agreed on all points.

This movie probably would have been even better if we got Lex's mech suit or Metallo instead of DD. They still could have Luthor create Doomsday and have that be the threat for JL then kill superman.

I was surprised that there was no direct establishing of that in the movie. I wonder if it will be in the extended cut.

It's fun imagining who they might cast for the rest of Batman's Rogue's Gallery. Hopefully Zack finds another role for Patrick Wilson. I'm an even bigger fan now after his work in the brilliant Fargo series.

We know he likes Carla Gugino, I wonder if we'll be seeing her in the DCCU soon.

I love Patrick Wilson. Incredibly underrated actor.

I'd cast him as Kent Nelson/Fate.

It'd be great if Snyder brought over all the Watchmen in meaningful roles.

Seems like nobody cares about Doomsday but I had a good time reading that series in high school. What was great about him was the build-up. So for me it is disappointing to have him reduced to a goon. Or, I guess in Snyder-speak, Doomsday got a fun little anecdote.

More people would care if it was done properly

I liked what they did with him. He was scary and had a twisted origin. I felt bad for Zod's corpse being turned into an abomination.

You bring up a great word....flaw!

The biggest flaw is Superman not being the Superman fans want, a guy who looks for survivors after the explosion, a guy who uses his God confidence to play around with Batman trying to change him and a guy who hangs out with humans, like a beat cop.

Sure I would love for him to be that light as a contrast to the bleak decade we live in where murder is allowed to flurish because of political correctness and a junk justice system while government corporation corruption is at an all time high, where we blame Mexico gangs for our drugs while we ignore that we create the demand for it, but he's not.

He's as dark as the times we live in, his mother even tells him we're not worth saving as a species, just ignore us and move along.

His earth father told him to let kids drown then he killed himself.

I'm not going to hold that against the movie though because just maybe he will eventually become the man his real father Jor-El wanted him to become.

His species wasn't all noble and perfect either.

Besides, it wasn't boring like MOS and it has the BATMAN post TDKR coffee shop, and that counts for alot! :lol

Great post! This Superman is still trying to find his place in this dark and bleak world. I feel like the end when he says "this is my world. You are my world" really encapsulates exactly what Superman was looking for. A reason for his being here. I cannot wait to see what they do with his character when he returns.

I like how its first instinct was to kill the man who created it. Going after Luthor.

The scene where Lex dips Zod's body into the water...it made me feel real uneasy. Here lies this warrior who fought with his last breath for his people, now being dishonored and transformed into some monster.

Again, this is the stuff Disney won't do because it'll scare the children.

Second time viewing even more impressed- I honestly believe as time goes on even the critics will alter their views....

Also agree that it wasn't the right time for Doomsday, and other villains such as Metallo would certainly have worked better.

As for the BvS and AoU comparisons, both films suffered from being overstuffed but I think AoU's less unbalanced structure made it a better watch.
