The best of those films did the least well financially? Naturally

It kind of makes sense. Check this out, the first film made a ton of cash because it was the first Spiderman film ever, and it was pretty good. However, by the time SM 2 comes out, the novelty of seeing Spidey for the first time on film is gone and some people didn't love the first film enough to go watch SM2 in theaters. But like you said, SM2 was the best, so naturally those who didn't see it in theaters saw it on DVD and the financial and critical success of SM2 probably helped SM3 make more money. I wouldn't be surprised if it has the biggest opening weekend of the trilogy. The expectations were pretty high for SM3 if I remember correctly.

Those Spider-Man 3 trailers were dope. The hype was real coming off the high and greatness of Spider-Man 2.

First time seeing Spidey on big screen and it being a solid movie explains the first movie box office. People not thinking the first movie was all that great explains the second movie box office. People really liking the second movie on dvd and cable plus an awesome trailer explains Spider-Man 3. That's my best guess.

Fine deductions, most likely correct. Pity it meant Hot Toys went straight for Spiderman 3 instead of making figures from the superior 2nd film.

Hot Toys Doc Ock and Green Goblin would have been insta-buys.

Agreed. I hated (and still hate) the movie design of Green Goblin, but that would still have been an awesome figure.

Yeah, especially if it had a poseable glider with glowing lights and a Willem Dafoe Norman Osborn headsculpt. Doc Ock with the tentacles would have been awesome.

I find myself very nostalgic for the original Raimi Spider-Man. To me that the was the moment that costumed Marvel superheroes truly "arrived" in cinema and it was just another highlight of that really fun era of films (with LOTR in full swing, us wondering if we'd see a SW film that didn't suck, etc.)

Some of us are still wondering that :monkey3
