Re: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Well, that list also ignores the fact that not all good movies make the biggest numbers anymore.

In this age, the likes of transformers and grown ups sequels are more appealing to people than movies that are actually better.

Re: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

So does the fact that you can't account for every variable justify embracing ever more arbitrary metrics? :D

I don't really care so long as a movie I like is at the top. :) I want Cameron knocked off his throne and I look forward to the day it happens. Whether its next year or when tickets are $200 a pop makes no difference to me. :D

Re: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Yet it's the only way to compare things accurately.

Incorrect. There's too many other factors apart from inflation. DVD's/blu-rays, 3D and IMAX theatrical surcharges, digital copies, rentals, too much muddying of the waters to say what movie people are seeing the most.

If you ignore it there's no point in comparing box office numbers.

That's my point. You really can't compare numbers from movies that have more than a few years between them. But we do it anyway because its fun (if pointless.)

Here's a cool breakdown of US blu-ray sales since 2009 ranking them purely by units sold:

Interesting that no one rushed out to own Titanic in high definition when it was released on blu in 2012. It hasn't even cracked the top 50. To date it has sold 214,824 DVD's and 310,852 blu-rays. A tiny fraction of those who saw it in the theater in 1997 have felt the need to actually own it/watch it at home.

Karamazov already answered that.

You seem to want one of two things: No comparison at all because we can't account for every possible parameter, or a crappy comparison because "no one cares about inflation". :dunno

"No one cares about inflation" is pretty much a fact. That's why any default "biggest box office" list on any site has Avatar at #1 and Titanic at #2. You have to do a little searching to see who's on top without inflation. But inflation doesn't tell the whole story. It just takes a profit amount and adjusts it. It does NOT tell us how many tickets were sold. How many tickets did Avatar sell? Nobody knows because it isn't tracked. I remember reading in 2011 that Thor made slightly more money than Captain America: The First Avenger but that Thor also sold a lot more 3D tickets and actually had less attendance. And that was for two movies that came out the *same* summer. But now those statistics are forever lost (unless someone can point me to a place where actual ticket purchases are recorded.)

So if boxofficemojo.com can't even tell us who sold more tickets in the same year what point is there in making a fuss over The Avengers vs. Titanic or Gone With The Wind? There really isn't. We can get overall profits earned and then play around with inflation, guesstimated 3D or IMAX surcharges, re-releases and so on but none of it is very precise. So we'll have Avatar and Titanic on top and other people getting uppity saying "But GWTW really sold more" as if 80 years of re-releases is somehow a fair comparison to a movie that has been out for 1-5 years.

If you really want to know how each movie impacted each generation then someone should figure out how to track ticket sales ONLY and then post what each movie made its first year or two of release. No cheating with 3D enhancements 10-15 years later or ongoing re-releases over decades when home video didn't exist. That I'd be really curious to see.

Re: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

BvsS would never beat E7 opening weekend.

We'll see when both films come out, but I predict BvS will have a larger opening weekend. I think reviews will be a major factor for both films. They both have a lot to prove and they have to overcome the previous films (the prequels and MOS). But right now, there is more general interest in the mainstream in BvS than there is about SWE7.
