Cameron will only make AVATAR movies from here on out

I still think the backlash on Avatar has been a bit over-dramatic. Any time I've watched it I've still really enjoyed it, I simply don't require 4 sequels is all.

the haters are just trolling for attention. avatar was incredible. one of the best alien planets on any movie ever created. i cant take anyone that hated it seriously.

agreed...but its JCs money ;)

I liked the first movie so looking forward to seeing where things go with the sequels. Sure the first one was simplistic and highly derivative, but it introduced us to a well realized world and a new species. I think folks tend to under estimate Cameron. Yes he's arrogant and annoying at times but he's also undeniably brilliant, which has made him one of the most commercially and critically successful filmmakers of all time. If he didn't have a plan as to where this story is going I don't think he'd be announcing all these sequels. They could certainly flop, but I'm guessing this will end up being Epic. Also knowing how Cameron likes to stay on the leading edge of technology, I would not be surprised if he's factoring in VR technology.

Not sure what backlash you're speaking of, but I don't like the movie so much, it is average at best. It was probably a victim of its own hype as much as anything. I'm not interested in any sequel, never mind four.

Seriously? I'd wager 90% of the Internet hates the movie. I rarely see anything positive said about it anywhere.

:lecture

It wouldn't exactly belong in the unpopular opinion thread. When the film was in cinemas, maybe. But today the majority of expressed opinions are trashing it or saying they hated it before it was cool to hate it.

I think it's decent, but not deserving the enormous success it received. It's a bit of a rip-off, but very few movies today aren't.

I won't get excited over it, but there's a good chance I'll see at least one of them when they are released.

For me, it's a fine escape, but it's nothing to incite passion or be inspired by.

I think avatar would have made a better ride than a movie. A 3D ride in Pandora.

Or some virtual reality thing with a helmet and moving chairs.

The idea and the visuals are really really good. The movie universe is very pretty. I would love to visit that world.

It's a good film but to me instantly forgetable and does not rate watching again- the effects and 3D were ground-breaking but that is what carries the film- the subject matter and characters held no interest for me. Just a personal thing- I actually prefer his Titanic to this!!!

Christmas 2023 (when the 5th Avatar movie is released) James Cameron will be 69 years old. That will mark 26 years since his last "non-Avatar" film. He'll no doubt take some sort of sabbatical after making four movies back to back (probably 2-3 years at least) before even considering directing another film. By the time whatever new film gets made he'll be 75 or older. I'm guessing we'll maybe get one more original James Cameron film, and that's a big maybe.

Who would have guessed that after making The Terminator, ALIENS, The Abyss, Terminator 2, True Lies and Titanic every 2-3 years that for the rest of his life he'd make five movies about giant smurfs and that's it?

I have great doubt he will do four more Avatar films-just wait and see if he changes plans in the next year or three.
Yeah what a huge disappointment because I was a huge Cameron fan at one time waiting to see what kind of film he would be doing next....Titanic was a big departure and Avatar- well it's Avatar. I thought he'd do Battle Angel and other different films but the success of Avatar just...I still don't get it.

No surprise at this point. I started this thread almost 4 years ago (whoa!) based on the following quote from Cameron himself:

“Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the Avatar business. Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar, Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4.” [Obviously, he meant "Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4, maybe Avatar 5"]

Nothing in FOUR YEARS has changed (except a delay in these new Avatar films). So, yeah, we're most likely never getting a non-Avatar movie from him again. :(

True, it's just crazy seeing the math become "official" in that if he does indeed make these four Avatar films there really won't even be a chance for him to do anything else given his age.

Agreed. :(

Such a damned shame. He was one of the best. Then he punted it away at the peak of his career for an Oscar baiting chick flick and a slew of cartoon movies. :banghead

He's going sooooooooo far out of his way to avoid being studio pressured into making more Terminator movies.

"I can't, I'm making more Avatar movies that will make ten times the amount of money that Terminator sequels would make!"
