Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I see, thank you for your "explanation" although a bit sarcastic; anyhow, it all boils down to merchandising.

Well, didn't Hellboy have action figures? Not sure if they made any with the swastika.

Also, I don't think I have ever seen a Quentin Tarantino movie related toy in any store, Nazis or not Nazis. Perhaps Kill Bill, not sure if it was available in stores though.

Luis

Hellboy had action figures for Collectors. Sold in stores that catered to Collectors. Hellboy 2 figures DID come out at TRU, but that store became some weird Collector/Kids Toy store now...so it doesnt count. And they called Hellboy, Red, and the box didnt say Hellboy 2...but HBII.

Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction had action figures, of sorts. And Reservior Dogs had a crap load of merch. In stores. Not in Wal-Mart or TRU.

Exactly, and they sell Call of Duty in Walmart, Target, Gamestop, Best Buy, etc, etc.

Luis

And those are M-Rated games that children cannot buy.

I think the target age is a lot younger than Call of Duty's targeted age.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

If there are no Nazis in this movie, I swear I'm going to protest and boycott it after my 4th or 5th viewing!

Don't push me Marvel, I'll do it!

Gimme a break, you know thats BS that isn't enforced. And by the same token I don't know a single 8 year old that buys his own toys with his work check each week...

The Indiana Jones line featured Nazi toys, the simple way around it was to paint the swastika armbands all black so they didn't register.

And it didn't ruin the movie or the toy line. It was the perfect balance.

So the toy red skull could have had the exact same uniform minus the armband and for $7 no one would complain.

Joe Johnston has no balls. Thats all it comes down to.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I don't want my five year old playing with a toy that has a swastika on it. That's my gut reaction.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

My point is the Swastika doesn't need to be on the toys at all :

But when you let garbage plastic that underdeveloped kids are going to slam togeather going "Pew Pew Pew" rule what content goes into your film, you have failed as a director and at your craft.

How about that family last year on the news that named their kids Hitler and other assorted nasty villain names :lol

I bet they're really pissed that there are no Nazis in Cap and just no more Nazis in general :lol

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

If a movie is compromising it's origins that make it what it is, in order to sell toys, it's probably going to be a ____ty stupid movie.

To be fair, this movie was guilty of this long before the whole Nazi thing came up.
Notice the suspicious absence of the word "America" from many of the marketing materials.

Really none of it suprising IMO. Always being politically correct careful not to offend tampering with sales. Depends on your point of view whether good or bad.

IMO a bummer however, whether the film is good doesn't rely on nazi's or marketing ploys. May be more accurate to source but still doesn't make or break the film. Many books to films have taken certain liberties and turned out ok. Still holding out hope for a decent flick since more good than bad seen thus far.

I don't think it's fair to place all the No-Nazi blame on the director. There's this thing called a Studio, that sometimes force the hand of directors since that's who the director works FOR. I'm sure Disney had a small hand in this guys. ;)

I wouldn't put too much blame on Disney since Marvel quashed the Red Skull PF and Captain America dio from having any swastikas long before Disney bought them.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Someone saw the Cap trailer at SXSW and here are his impressions...

Captain America: The First Avenger:

It partly seems to be a lot like Indiana Jones. Everything seems to be very natural and real. Can’t remember any usage of CGI. Amazing decorations, costumes. And the best thing about this film, it looks like the best part of its production is its script. A serious fantastic-military detective thriller….

Why not? If he's killing the Nazi's, whats the problem? They're great villains for any action figure set.

Gimme a break, you know thats BS that isn't enforced. And by the same token I don't know a single 8 year old that buys his own toys with his work check each week...

Dude, at Wal-Mart, I forgot my ID, and tried to buy...I think it was District 9 or something, and they wouldnt let me buy it. Seriously. I told them when my birthday was, but they HAVE to go by policy.

Same thing happend at GameStop when I bought Halo Reach. It is enforced.

And yes, Johnson has no balls. I agree with you. But the movie is run by it's merch. Same as Terminator Salvation.
