Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I realized that I let the hype get the best of me when I saw the Batman V Superman trailer. I do the exact same thing anytime I see a trailer for a Spider-man open-world video game. I get so stoked to play it, but then when it gets closer to release I remember that I wasn't the biggest fan of the last entry. I'm still really excited for it, but the gimmick of seeing Batman and Superman on screen will loose it's appeal in about ten minutes unless it's a good movie.

Anyways, this is my most anticipated superhero movie of next year, or at least until Marvel shows us trailers of Civil War and Dr. Strange. I don't know anything about Dr. Strange, so I'm excited to learn about him. I don't know many of these Suicide Squad characters, so that's one of the biggest appeals of this movie.

Even though I'm sure someone will convince me to go see this with them, I have almost no interest. There is no way this won't turn out to be a Will Smith movie, with everyone else playing second fiddle. This really is a group movie, similar to Avengers in that way, but I don't think Smith's ego will allow it.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Yeah cant get excited neither.
I like the cast they assembled save for Will Smith and Courtney Jai and dont like Croc look (looks like a gremlins on steroids)
Dont know the comic, but i hope they are real bad guys, real ****ed up who are scary.
But that shot with Smith and i child make me think they will go bad guys with heart...
Dunno what to expect.
We'll see.

Deadshot has always been a prominent member of the SS. As soon as they cast Smith, I rolled my eyes. If anyone is going to bring this movie down, it's him. Never was a Will Smith fan. The problem is I'm a HUGE Deadshot fan. I know Bats, Harley, Joker, Croc, and a whole slew of other characters are going to be in SS but for me personally, I'm most interested in Deadshot and Deathstroke. I know it's a pipe dream but I was really hoping Ryan Gosling was going to get cast as Deadshot. He would have looked perfect for the part and has some serious acting chops. Instead we get Will Smith.....:gah:

Smith is a better actor than Gosling.

Anyway, I'm getting a southern vibe from Joker. Anyone else? Doesn't sound like Ledger to me.

As a super fan of neither, I would say they are about on par. Both reasonably good, though. I think Will Smith is like Tom Cruise, in that his public persona, popularity, and willingness to be in crummy movies sometimes for a paycheck bias folks' perceptions of him. I Am Legend wasn't a great movie IMO, but I thought he did an excellent job in it, making the best of the material.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I believe Gosling has stated no comic book roles for him. Gonna stick to making pennies with the indi flicks.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I detect a massive cosplay-fanfilm-shot-over-weekends vibe from this project.

Has he ever been approached for a comic book role though? If not I'm sure the $$$ would change that.

Eventually, there's got to be something that entices him. If he says, "nothing ever has" I call BS. I can understand if it's some "principle" but still - good writing and characters are what it's all about - from a comic book, graphic novel, wherever. The guy a crazy talent. Would hate to see him shy away because of some "label."

I don't see him playing US Agent or Nighthawk anytime soon, but I think he'd do good with a B or C lister who wasn't a comic book hero as much as he was a fictional character. For example Moon Knight who's a super-hero yes, but is such a f@cked up character that you could make a horror/political thriller from him. Gosling's good though, he's not ont of those "teen heartthrobs" and he's got quite a sad backstory. Though I don't see why someone who made Crazy, Stupid Love would not get into a CBM out of a principle....

As for the topic at hand, SS's looking good. I really liked the Original Vol (not the current bull***** they're publishing) so I'm kinda dissapointed that they're doing away with the political and moral undertones in order to make a "generic" action movie. Still, it looks neat, I love Leto and think he'll nail it and hey, it's got Margot Robbie in fishnets and stockings (yeah, yeah, WOWS...)! Then again, I saw Green Lantern and both F4 movies in theaters, so, yeah...

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Gosling would've been a bigger miscast than Smith.

Gosling's fantastic, but not a hint of DS in him.

Smith on the other hand, at least kinda looks like DS in the Arkham movie.

Classic Deadshot (IIRC) was a nihilist/pessimist with a "death wish", who cared only for his daughter (ignoring his first appearance as a dapper Batman-lite). Current Deadshot though is less complex and is the classic "tortured but still good in his heart bad-guy" and Smith can easily do that. I'd have preferred 80s Lawton, but oh well, only time will tell.

PS: I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but DS's civillian clothes are a really nice homage to his FA.

Death wish Deadshot has always been my favorite take on the character. The reason I don't like Smith is because he's basically the same dude in every movie. His personality shows in almost all of his roles. I like my Deadshot ruthless and calculating with a death wish. The first time Smith smiles or cracks a joke or tries to be charming will make me gag.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Intelligent, nihilistic, with no wicked sense of humor?

Wicked sense of humor is preferred. Deadshot has one. However, I'm talking about Tarantino styled humor (think Pulp Fiction)...dark and wicked. Not Men in Black or Independence Day. Will Smith has always been a wise cracking charmer with a toothy grin. Not my idea of Deadshot. When I saw Gosling in Drive, I could completely see him as Lawton. A cold and calculating man with a vicious nature that can get the job done. IMO, Gosling would have made a great Deadshot. A far better one than Will Smith.
