Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I couldn't get into that film, unfortunately. I got all excited at the return of Bruce Timm, but then I remembered...wait a sec, it's not like I loved the other movies. Actually, if I'm going to be honest, a lot of Batman the Animated Series wasn't good. For every "Two Face", there's a "Tyger, Tyger." It's a kids cartoon, an amazing one at that, but I started watching Mask of the Phantasm recently, and I thought about your comments about "that not being like the real Batman," and I was like your crazy, Gaspar. I didn't say that to you, but I was thinking it! But then I went back, and read my trades of 70s stories that BTAS adapted from, and even those were much more mature than their adaptations. Heck, Batman would knock guys into getting their faces burnt off with acid. And then, I started think about the Nolan movies, and I realized what I loved about them is how flawed and "relate-able" Batman Begins and The Dark Knight they made Bruce Wayne compared the comic book counter-part.

I'm gonna be sacrilegious but I think Superman TAS is better than BTAS, not just because of me being a Supes fan, it just has better animation and better stories imo.

However, after getting the Marvel Unlimited subscriptions, I've been reading a ton of Marvel, and preferring some characters to Batman. Daredevil, Captain America, and Spider-man being the main ones. But after reading from various superheroes, I realized I just love whatever I'm reading at the moment and I'm invested in the soap opera of their lives. Yet, whenever the writer changed, the character completely changed based on the writer. They didn't really have any defined traits that made them unique like Batman or even Superman.
That's just the case with every single character DC or Marvel if you read long enough, that's why people started to follow writers instead of characters.

In fact, its seems like everyone seems like derivations of those two characters.
This is correct.

Even though Frank Miller's Daredevil is my favorite comic book run, all I could think was, without Frank, this guy is just a either watered down Batman (when he was written darker and getting constantly beaten down) or a watered down Superman (when he was going around fighting villains like Stilt Man or the Spot). When the writer changed for Captain America, and gave him a different voice, I'm like this is a watered down version of Superman and Batman. And when Spider-man got a new writer, I though the same of him. Regardless, of how bad Superman or Batman have been written, there's a reason why most fans cry foul at certain characteristics, because they have specific philosophies that make their characters unique. It's why fans got angry when Batman said "I'm not going kill you, but I don't have to save you" in Batman Begins. Batman will do whatever it takes to save any life, and if he can't, it's because he simply couldn't with all his might. That's the problem with Superman snapping Zod's neck in Man of Steel. If fans could think of a better way than Superman to avoid that situation that's a problem. The writer has to work extremely hard to make him smart as or smarter than us. Superman and Batman seek to accomplish the same goal with selflessness and compassion, but Superman prioritizes civilians— inspiring hope in them—in hopes of creating a better world whereas Batman prioritizes criminals—inspiring fear in them— in hopes of creating a better world. Once these men fully matured before donning their costumes, and once they became Superman and Batman, those costumes meant something. They don't need to change, the world changes around them, and what's interesting is that they refuse to budge from their morality and beliefs—no matter how terrible things get. They might question them and falter on the occasion, but they know what their costumes mean as icons. Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are not Batman and Superman in my opinion. They are capable of flaws, but Batman and Superman better than them, and they both know it, and it makes them super compelling. Batman and Superman have to be the best at what we do. Batman has to master ever physical goal that human ever dreamed of (even though it's inhumanely possible) because it gives us something to strive fore. Superman has powers that we dream of having—thinking that life would be so much better with them—but Superman uses all those gifts righteously (that too is inhumane because we can't help but sin.) And Goku is better than both of them because...he just makes me smile:lol. That's my take. Or at least that's my take at this exact time. Who knows, I'm young. Maybe, it'll change by tommorow! :lol

I agree with all of this, but I also think every single time Superman or Batman (or whatever character) stories are re-told, you can allow and expect a different interpretation.

The point is I now get where your coming from with "not the real Batman"! :lol
Did I ever say that with BTAS? :lol I really don't think so, nor I said it with Nolan, I think Nolan's Batman is still very Batman-y.

Here's something interesting.

The prison guard behind Deadshot is played Ike Barinholtz

And he's also working as a Joker henchman later in the trailer...so does the Joker have a guy working in the prison? Is the scene with the joker a flashback and in the present he's working for Amanda Waller as a prison guard?

That's not Barinholtz in the second pic, though; it's Jim Parrack.

I think the villain is Enchantress and all her "demons" she summons

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I liked that the trailer made Kinnaman out to be the most prominent male lead as opposed to Smith. Hopefully that's the case in the actual film.

Probably, his name is above the tittle of the picture, and that was Tom Hardy's role originally but he couldn't do the film because of The Revenant. He said he regretted not being able to be in the film. After seeing the trailer, I can see why, it looks like a lot of fun.

That's very interesting. You're wrong. But that's very interesting. I'm just kidding. I prefer watching STAS now since Nolan Batman is my favorite Batman in the media, and so far, that's the best Superman that I've seen. Plus, The Late Mr. Kent and Apocalypse are probably my two favorite episodes (I guess technically 3 since Apocalypse is a 2 parter) in the DCAU. I like a good number of BTAS episodes, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan of that Batman like Bale Batman. I tried getting to the Scott Snyder Batman because a lot of people say it's a lot like a mature BTAS Batman, but I didn't really care for it. Then I realized, I don't really care for BTAS Batman. Same with Arkham Batman. People say that's grown up BTAS Batman, and I initially disagreed because I thought I loved BTAS Batman so much, but after re-watching some BTAS after playing the games, I realized they might be right. I just need to connect with Bruce Wayne along with Batman to care about him, and Bale Batman gave me that. Although, I don't like that voice or the costume, and I'm not fond of the characterizations of any of the characters in the Dark Knight Rises, so I hope Affleck Batman is better. I liked them showing him training in the trailer, so he's already endeared himself to me.

Animation-wise, Spectacular Spider-man might be my favorite overall. It's a shame it was cancelled.

That's just the case with every single character DC or Marvel if you read long enough, that's why people started to follow writers instead of characters.

I need to find a long running consistent Batman run to my liking. I also want to read some of the New 52 Superman because, while I don't like what was going on with Batman, everything with Superman sounds like I would love it. I saw pics of him in a t-shirt and apparently, he lost his powers, and that sounds so cool to me (Robo, tech-heavy, and cloning Scott Snyder Batman and Omnipotent Joker is not my thing at all). Although, I was a lover of the John Bryne Superman, and folks say that ruined Superman, so I don't know! :lol

I want to re-read the Knightfall novel because I think that's what got me so connected him as a kid over the comic. Then again, I was a kid, so I don't know how I'll feel as an adult. I also want to read the No Man's Land Novel, since the writing in that comic doesn't really hold up for me upon re-reading that either. Despite a lot of violence, drug references, and swearing in old comics, I still feel a lot of comics were written for children. Stuff like the Killing Joke has just as much *************** as that, but it's a far more sophisticated story that got better as I matured because I could better comprehend what was going on.

I think my enthusiasm for BvS proves my love for them because no matter how bad anything might seem, I'm super excited. If Civil War, Daredevil Season 2, or the new Spider-man movie got mediocre reviews, I would skip them and just watch them when I got around to them years later like most superhero stuff. With BvS, I'm not even expecting it to be great, but I have to see it in theaters. I don't know how because I'm kind of doing bad health-wise, but if I have to get an IV in with me, I'm seeing it! :lol

I agree with all of this, but I also think every single time Superman or Batman (or whatever character) stories are re-told, you can allow and expect a different interpretation.

Oh I agree! Although, I'm kind of hoping this new cinematic universe gives me some personal definitive interpretations of Superman and Batman, so I can latch on to them. I love various Elseworld's tales though. Dark Knight Returns Batman is my favorite Batman and Kingdom Come Superman is my favorite Superman. But I really liked stuff like seeing Batman as a vampire or Superman as the leader of the Soviet Union.

Did I ever say that with BTAS? :lol I really don't think so, nor I said it with Nolan, I think Nolan's Batman is still very Batman-y.

Yes, yes you did. I already feel silly for writing such a long post (sorry about that), so you had to have written it! :lol

Word from elmayimbe that the villain is Incubus, guess we'll see. Seems to be a better guess than Tattooed Man (rumored to be who Common is playing). The villain's look and powers seem to be more mystical and magic-based.

Oh god. Well, if any fiend could drive these characters to committing suicide, that would be it.
