Disney premium format !!

I just have a feeling this line will bomb. Every Christmas announcement so far hasn't led a very long life. First the LotR 12" figures then WoW. We got 7 LotR in a couple of years and one WoW dio. I'm hoping Disney is a big enough license to do well, but I would have thought LotR was too.

I doubt that very much, and if it does it won't be because of the fans. It's up to Sideshow to keep the releases coming so that this doesn't end up like LotR and WoW. I will be supporting the Disney line 100%, whether it will be buying something for myself or my wife, there is a lot I am looking forward to from this.

From what I can see, SS is just selling existing Walt Disney Classic Collection pieces. Other than WDCC, Bowen, Olsweski, and Armane were the only ones putting out licsenced new pieces. Bowen just released Gargoyles.

You guys didn't obviously watch the announcement. Sideshow made a video specifically saying they ARE making PFs. They will of course offer product from other companies because it helps keep collector interest but they are making original product. Now if I can get a Rocketeer and a Jack Sparrow PF everything else will be icing on the cake.

Jack Sparrow has been done to death. I can't see SS bringing anything exciting to this figure that hasn't already been done. Plenty of Rocketeers also. I would make an acception on the Rocketeer if it came with a smokin' hot Jennifer Connelly. I'ld rather see well done animated characters, or if they are doing live action I'ld rather see something that hasn't been done before like a Guy Williams Zorro or The Scarecrow of Romneh Marsh

I feel the same, I'd rather see Classic Disney characters and Pixar characters, Jack Sparrow is really low on my priority list and Rocketeer isn't even on it.

Give me Mickey, Donald Duck, (please God) WALL-E , Woody & Buzz from Toy Story, Mike & Sully from Monster's Inc., The Incredibles and Belle & Beast to name a few.

Really anxious to see these as a fan of mixed media collectibles in general, but I have to say I'm pretty much only 100% promising to buy Tron for myself. It'll really have to be special to get me to buy other characters.

One thing I'm not sure anyone mentioned, how about stuff from rides? Such as the 3 hitchhikers of the Haunted Mansion. That would be really cool.

If the characters chosen to show in the video package are any indication then we'll be seeing the Evil Queen from Snow White and Jessica Rabbit up first along with Jack Sparrow.

I think so as well. I think this line will have lots of items that will take time to produce causing wait times for them to be as perfect as possible. That will cause many bandwagon fans to want to move the next big thing. Not to mention I don't know how many Disney fans will want to drop the amount of cash a PF costs for the rights to have one. My guess this line goes the way of the T-Rex.

I would like to see a Jack Sparrow PF though. Thats a figure that MUST be done in PF and one likely to sell quite well.

They already do, the Walt Disney Classics Collection has pieces that cost $300 and above and sometimes have whole collections for certain movies. Like Beauty and the Beast and Snow White, they have ALL of the characters for each of those films, so we're talking a minimum of $100 per figurine and $800 or more for the whole thing and those are the small ones. There are also the Disney Big Figures that were already out there and people were spending $250+ for those, Disney fans have no problem spending the cash.

I think the key to success of this line really depends if SSC does "business as usual" (ie market to only the same fans they always do) or spread out and somehow really market to HARDCORE Disney fans.

If they market to those Disney fans that never bought an SSC item in their life, will they keep the normal plan of taking 6-8 months between announcement and delivery? That is indeed a long time. Newbs to SSC will be confused and frustrated.

I know I was when Jedi Luke was my first SSC figure.

But if they do reach out via marketing at Disney Stores or connect with online Disney forumns and other Disney collector clubs and so on then this could be HUGE.

Disney fans have no problem spending the cash if its warranted. Back when Master Replicas was still up and running at full force they did focus groups and reached out to Disneyana Collectors, forums and boards and got their feedback and the reality is that there is so much Disney product, their license has been sold to so many licensees that Disney fans really feel like they can pick and choose without too much issue. Even high ticketed items. The MR offerings weren't that great, their best being the Monorail but even that was hindered by the fact other licensees were selling Monorails and models that were similar and less expensive. I have all of MR's Disneyana offerings and I bought them at a 1/3 of the cost. That is telling.

SSC will have to knock it out of the park first and foremost and the fans will come. WDCC are great offerings most of them, done with a great set of attention to detail and with the fan in mind, my wife has many so it isn't surprising to see some of those piece selling as much as the Doom PF. If SSC plays their cards right this could be the most popular line they've ever had.

That is also true, MR's biggest downfall in terms of Marvel is that no one knew about their product until its was bargain basement priced on eBay. It had its fan's here and elsewhere but for the majority people had no clue it existed. So unawareness of a brand breeds the death of that brand. Not to mention that Marvel was very rigid with MR, not allowing changes after it had been approved so things like inaccurate coloring and sculpt couldn't be changed once it reached final approval. So that is why we had awkward sculpts like Thor for the Comic covers of the Spider-Man masks that were odd fitting.

Another nod to a Jessica Rabbit PF....

Q: Being a Sci-Fi/Horror guy, I wasn’t too excited about the Disney license until you started talking about a Premium Format Jessica Rabbit and stuff like that. When you mentioned that they have over 500 movies to work from, I realized we wouldn’t just be getting cutesie stuff from you guys like I initially thought. That being said, and with my curiosity peaked now, what are the chances of seeing some great collectibles from ‘The Black Hole’, one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi movies ever? A PF Maximillian would be amazing with light up visor!

A: While Disney may at first glance seem like a very big sidestep from the current range of Sideshow product, we do think you’ll be surprised at just how many characters from the Disney library will fit within the Premium Format umbrella, and look good displayed with your existing collection. We’ll definitely pass along your Maximillian suggestion. We’ll also pass along your positive comment about Jessica Rabbit - in fact, we may pass it along in duplicate or triplicate
