Re: DISNEY / FOX Deal Close! Thread Still Open! Please Come In!
I think that after years of biting their tongues while Fox monkeyed around with X-Men and FF while ignoring any collaboration, Feige and Marvel are chomping at the bit to wipe away the Singerverse and put forth their own vision. They have probably been roughing out story ideas, concept art, and a casting shortlist for key roles for several months, because the studios have been talking for a while. There might even be contingency plans for adding an after credit scene or two to Avengers 3 or Avengers 4.
Before this news broke, I would have been content with the FF going back to Marvel and the X-Men staying in its own separate universe because I didn't think Fox would ever let them go. Fox did do some very things with X-Men, (Jackman, Stewart, McKellan, McAvoy, Fassbender, X2, DofP, Logan and Deadpool), some good things (XFC, Quicksilver), and some okay things (X-Men 1, Wolverine II). But let's not forget (X3, Wolverine I, biker costumes, bland casting, poor interpretations of characters, Apocalypse). Not to mention, the continuity is an absolute mess. Let's say you port over the Singerverse X-Men as is to the MCU. How do you take characters who were teenagers in the '90s and have them played by the same actors in 2018/2019? They should be in their late 30s/early 40s. Sure you can say time stone/reality stone, but I just don't see Marvel using the stones as the deus ex machina to incorporate the Singerverse as opposed to doing their own vision. I always went into X-Men films hoping for the best. While I found several of them to be good to very good, I always hoped that the franchise would be rebooted with a more comic-accurate approach whether from Fox or someone else. X-Men Dark Phoenix may be great or it may be a disaster. If it's great, it could be the perfect way to bookend the franchise. If it's terrible, it will help validate the argument of bringing them back to Marvel. This is Kinberg's first directing gig and his writing has run hot and cold, but that doesn't mean he can't hit a home run. I plan to see it regardless.
As for Fantastic Four, I don't think there are many folks clamoring for a continuation of one of Fox's versions. FF can pretty easily slip into the MCU. I would not be surprised to see the Stark tower become the new Baxter Building. I'm really looking forward to seeing Marvel's take-- a great looking CGI Thing, Doctor Doom in his iconic armor, Silver Surfer riding the spaceways (hopefully in GotG3), a 200- to 300-foot-tall Galactus, Kirby-inspired technology, etc.
While I don't read comics, it will also be nice to once again see X-Men and Fantastic Four prominently featured in Marvel merchandising, games, and promotions.
