Sure, while at the same time almost everyone PROFILES themselves, gives out their personal information(their location, work, likes, dislikes, who their friends are) then they post pictures of themselves that Facebook OWNS according to their agreement.Everything you say can be used against you....it's perfect for BIG BROTHER for databasing information while the user freely gives away all their personal information ;)

"Big Brother", the government, or whoever else, doesn't need Facebook to keep tabs on someone. Of course, people should use their better judgements on what they decide to post. But, if they're overly paranoid about an unseen force that's out to get them, then I'd think that Facebook isn't the only thing that they'd have a problem with. They should just give up all of their electronics and become Amish :dunno

True enough.....as you can see I used to a lot. Hardly do at all anymore. Even at that texting friends in moderation is fine, but when it keeps a family from talking to each other at the dinner table it's gone too far.

Bollocks. Anyone who understands history will note that society has forever been 'going down the crapper'.

Ask the black man what he thought about life in the '50s. Ask the woman who expected to be taken seriously in her chosen profession what she thought about it.

There are over 6 billion people on this planet, and the more complex and sophisticated a society becomes, the more challenged will be its traditions and interactions.

All this talk about conspiracies just shows how privileged some people can be. I've lived in a real autocracy and I know exactly what that looks like. People waxing lyrical about the threat to privacy and rights in modern, Western democracies :lol

yup. I agree with your POV there.

People talk about being happier after they've quit FB, but overall this board has way more negativity than my FB feed... :monkey1

Actually, it's not a false statement that every generation is worse becaue it is. If you want to claim that today is just a different set of challenges be my guest, but I disagree. I also never claimed the 50s were a picture perfect society. I claimed it was on average safer and it was.

Simple fact is there is no perfect system or government on this earth. Every system has its faults and shortcomings, but in the US we had the best of the worldly systems and now it's falling apart before our eyes.

Hmm, I wonder why it was safer? Because they didn't have google, or sinister governance? Or perhaps because relatively homogenous societies tend to be safer than those made up of many different ethnic and religious groups?

...and somehow that perception is born from notions of online privacy and government monitoring of its citizens via the internet. OK...

I've heard that too, but I'm not sure why people would be unhappy on FB. You have control over who sees what and who you're "friends" with. If you're unhappy with someone for whatever reason, get rid of them. Maybe they shouldn't have been your "friend" to begin with.

Note to self: post negative things on occ's FB page.

I have never actually seen the kind of drama and arguments on facebook that I have seen in here from time to time.
Maybe I am just friends with nice people that get along or I miss the fights. But Facebook can actually be boring in that sense.

Even on the facebook groups, people tend to get along. I've never seen any really big fights or anything.

And again the "for the greater good" crowrd is the crowd who will happily sign up for the loss of individule rights and liberty.......exactly what the government hopes for.....paralyze people with fear and slowly enslave them without them even knowing it.

There ain't **** on my facebook. What the **** is the goverment going to do with

"What's up?

Not much, you?

Same. You want to chill?

Sure.

Word, i'll hit you up in a bit."

Riveting.

Funny how back in the 50s people left their cars unlocked, left theri front doors unlocked and walked down the street at night and felt safe. It doesnt mean crime didn't exist back then, but it was far less common and less violent in most instances and that was managed without constant monitoring by big brother. Society as a whole has declined rapidly and is only getting worse. I could go on and on about what was and what is today, but most just poo poo it off.

The more people you have, the higher percentage of crazies. Add to that the changes in laws, etc. and you have more crime. I could go on and on too, but.......won't change anything. :(

Food for thought. If you're planning on murdering a ton of people, don't put that **** on Facebook. :lol

back in the 50's they were buying a loaf of bread for a silver dime (10 cents)...today a loaf of bread almost costs 5 federal reserve notes..

I wonder how prices just jump up like that....was it because the bread should cost more? or was it because the unbacked dollar has lost it buying power over the years causing inflation..

More like businesses just keep raising the prices till people can't pay it anymore. Businesses kept up with cost of living raises. Now, we don't get cost of living raises but they'll keep raising the prices as long as the majority of people buy it.

Gas is a good example. Used to be if gas got high, people cut back or bought smaller cars. Not anymore because people would rather have the nice big truck than have money in the bank.
