Recently we got a chance to interview Jeff Gardiner from Bethesda. He is the producer on Fallout 3 and the lead producer of all the DLC. We had wanted to post the interview earlier although due to their busy schedule Bethesda was only able to do the interview just recently. You know what they say though, better late than never.
Can you tell the readers your name and your role on Fallout 3?
Jeff Gardiner, Producer on Fallout 3, Lead Producer of all the DLC.
How did you get involved in working on Fallout 3?
I’ve been working at Bethesda Game Studios for over three years now. I came in on Fallout as the Design Producer late in the “Pre-Production” phase.
Recently we have seen a lot of DLC being released for games, most being in the forms of expansion packs of some sort. What do you think The Pitt will do to stand out, what are you guys doing to set the Fallout 3 DLC apart from other game’s DLC.
Our DLC differs dramatically from other expansion packs in that it drops right into a player’s existing game. You don’t have to do a separate load, or start a new character, in order to enjoy it. All of the weapons, armor, perks and skills gained while playing The Pitt are useable anywhere else in the game world.
Can you tell us a bit about The Pitt? What is the story behind it?
The Pitt opens with the player encountering an escaped slave from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The slave, Werhner, claims that the leader of “the Pitt” has created a cure for mutations… Once inside the Pitt the player will take on the role of a Slave – they’ll have to find work, and figure out how to gain audience with raider boss. From there things could start to devolve depending heavily on how the player chooses to proceed.
What new features are there in The Pitt?
There is plenty of new gear in The Pitt including several new raider armors, even a stylized version of the Brotherhood of Steels’ Power Armor. The new weapons include an “AutoAxe,” a two handled melee weapon complete with a serrated rotary blade, great for sawing through bone, and a silenced scoped automatic rifle we’ve coined “The Infiltrator.” There are also three new perks, and four new achievements ready to be unlocked.
How have you taken the criticisms from Operation Anchorage and worked to improve them for The Pitt? What are some changes that the fans wanted?
The Pitt was in production at the same time as Operation: Anchorage. That being said, the major criticism of Anchorage was that it was linear and combat oriented. Of course, that was always what Anchorage was intended to be. This is not so with The Pitt, which is a much more traditional Fallout 3 style quest; a dramatic narrative dictated by player choice, a morally gray theme, and several ways in which to handle given situations.
Why did you decide to change the location to Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh is a great setting for Fallout; it wasn’t directly hit in the nuclear onslaught. Unlike DC, there are actual skyscrapers. The bridges and the river set it apart as well. Our art department has done an outstanding job capturing the feel of the city.
Now that Fallout 3 is going to include another city, Pittsburgh how will this come into play in general gameplay. Will Pittsburgh always be there? Even after we finish the quests can we come back and still find things to do there?
You can always revisit Pittsburgh after completing The Pitt. There are a handful of repeatable quests, and the city will change based upon the actions a player takes while on the quest line.
Have you made any improvements or enhancements to the general Fallout 3 gameplay with The Pitt? Such as patching bugs, balancing certain aspects of gameplay, adjusting various aspects of the game or just any gameplay changes in general?
No, out DLC does not change the game code.
Are morality and judgment going to come into play in The Pitt? Will it force us to make any hard moral decisions?
Absolutely, the decisions made on The Pitt are perhaps the most morally ambiguous to date.
Operation Anchorage was quite linear, can we expect the same from The Pitt?
No, The Pitt is an entirely new settlement for the player to explore.
Can you tell us about some of the new perks?
There are three, Auto Axpert, Booster Shot and Pitt Fighter. The Auto Axpert increases your killing efficacy with the new AutoAxe, Booster Shot increases you radiation resitance, and Pitt Fighter increases both radiation resistance and damage resistance.
Can you give us any details on Broken Steel?
Broken Steel will not only allow the player to continue the main quest of Fallout 3, but it also increases the level cap from 20 to 30. It adds in a whole bevy of new armor, weapons, creatures, and perks to accommodate the additional gameplay!
Community Questions
Gtdriver2012: Are there going to be items and goods sold by shop keepers in The Pitt that we haven’t seen yet.
There are a few new items in The Pitt that can be bought and traded, such as new Raider Armor and Steel Ingots which are found throughout the Mill and surrounding area. There’s a perk involving the Ingots, but you’ll have to find the majority of them to unlock it.
MattKohl101: Will The Pitt be able to handle the players who have maxed out their characters? My character is an absolute beast. I would hate for it not to be a challenge.
The Pitt scales all the way up to level 20. A lot of us at BethSoft have found the game more fun with the difficult ratcheted up a bit, you may want to try that!
SedativeChunk: What real world locations will you be able to travel to in the Pitt? Will you be able to visit Heinz Field, Mellon Arena, and other real world Pittsburgh locations?
While The Pitt captures the skyline and general feel of Pittsburgh, including the bridges, there are no real-world locations to visit.
AreaCode: Any new followers and/or increase the current caps like the follower cap of 2?
No, sorry, not with The Pitt!
Greenbean42: Will you be able to bring your henchmen with you to the pitt?
Nope, no henchmen.
Will there be any new weapon builds or just premade weapons?
No new custom weapons.
Will there be any new drugs or meds in this DLC?
No new medication, the Raiders aren’t that sophisticated.
Will there be a new house or new mode of transportation?
No player housing – it would have required too much traveling to be useful.
Rokinsam: Can I bring Fawkes along with me?
No, again, henchmen are not allowed. The player character has to be disguised as a slave, so having a big talking supermutant along with you wouldn’t really fit!
TheGearGrinder: My question is how will the map on your pipboy work for the PITT. I am sure the local map will show something but the world map, will it be of Pittsburgh or just the wasteland without your location on it.
The World Map will be of Pittsburgh when you’re in The Pitt.
David: How many quests, and hours will this DLC be/have.
The Pitt is one main quest with some smaller side quests. It’s about four hours of gameplay.
