Box Office: 'Fantastic Four' Is Doomed By $11.3 Million Friday Gross
(that includes the 2.7 million thursday so it actually only made 8.6 million Friday)
There's a movie called "God is Not Dead" that features a Christian kid having a public debate in front of his Philosophy class with his Professor about evidence regarding the existence of God. It's a so so movie but one of the best lines in the entire film is when the kid's pastor tells him, "Don't try to be clever, just tell the truth."
Because really, the majority of the internet is just people trying to be clever, trying to be hilarious, trying to get "reputation," or just announcing their already entrenched personal biases (and trying to be clever, hilarious, etc., when doing that as well.) There's only a few people that I ever see here giving honest opinions without thought of how those opinions conflict with their biases or how unpopular they may be.
Is the new Fantastic Four terrible? From what I've seen, it probably is. The trailers haven't wow'd me, everyone making it seems to be a flippant, uncommitted ***hole, and rarely have underwhelming footage + idiots somehow come together to make a good or great film. Is it a "worst movie ever" type of film? Doubtful. Is it a MOS or TDKR where people will reference its missteps for years to come? Again, I doubt it. Honestly I doubt enough people will even see it to make it this big thing that stays at the tip of our tongues. I'm sure I'll watch it on FX or something a few years from now just like I did with Rise of the Silver Surfer a few years after it came out. By then I'm sure this movie will be long forgotten by everyone else.
Damn, that's still too high. I was hoping they wouldn't hit $20M for a few weeks, yet (or ever, ideally).
This isn't about "FOX fans being hurt" or trying to defend the movie. This is about employing logic by judging a movie based on its quality rather than its negative buzz on social media (which DISNEY is probably responsible for in the first place).
The first act of the film is strong, focusing mainly on Reed's bond with Ben and Dr. Storm's respect for Victor, along with the mechanics of the inter-dimensional experiment. The second act is solid, covering the aftermath of the transformations via a foundation of realism and the revelation of Victor as a great threat. When you enter the third act, the film clearly ceases to be Trank's and becomes generic with a rushed final battle and a cookie cutter conclusion.
Having had a chance to hear about Trank's cut which was screened a while back, the third act was much stronger withVictor's return amounting to a much longer cat and mouse game between him and the FF inside Area 57, the final battle being much more serious with Johnny ending up in a coma and Ben seemingy beating Victor to death (he literally cracks his face open, allowing the breathing apparatus that had fused with him to fall off) and the government continuing to use the door without the FF's consent amounting to something else crossing over (that looked like Annihilus). The last shot was Reed, Sue and Ben sitting by Johnny's hospital bed. As Reed's about to doze off he notices the flames engulf Johnny's body and then they cut to black. Much better ending then what we got. The stinger also sounded awesome with Apocalypse abducting Doom thinking he was Kang because they share the same DNA, clearly beginning the crossover with the X-Men.
The film in theaters is by no means a terrible film, just one that suffered some post-production butchering. Like The Incredible Hulk, its a good movie that could have been great had they left it alone and not tried to make it more accessible. I give it a 7/10 but from the sounds of it would have given Trank's cut a 9/10.
The biggest crime right now is seeing generic popcorn crap like Iron Man 2, Thor (2011), Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World & Ant-Man certified fresh when this film sits at a Rotten 9%. Disney's involvement with the press is becoming obvious at this point and its only going to get worse as they alienate more and more filmmakers like Favreau, Whedon and Wright and continue to release lifeless summer fare that critics will still rate 8/10 or a B. I actually read through most of the Ant-Man reviews. The biggest shock to me was that most critics gave that film the same score they gave Batman Begins or X2. Nonsense.
Of course the DISNEY disciples eat it up and can't wait for the next PG-heavy, safe, tasteless, forgettable MCU installment.
Nice synopsis pturtle.
I'll get around to this one, but it's sad. These guys are my faves apart from Spidey & HULK, so another swing & a miss is just too bitter a pill to swallow. All the editing & story changes sound like one gigantic cluster ****.
The ending of F4 might possibly be the worst ending I've ever seen in a movie.
The reason the movie is a 9% everywhere I think has to do with the ending. It's a big joke.
The first hour is really solid, there's a few problems here and there but could have easily been fixed with an extra scene, some of which I found in the trailer and was taken out for whatever reason.
The whole monster movie that Trank wanted to make was the best part of the movie, and right when they get to it, the movie jumps a year ahead, it made no sense at all. The movie doesn't even show them learning to use their powers, which is something that Trank had teased when we first heard about the movie.
I'm pretty sure Doom going Scanners on everyone's head was shot by Trank as well, and that scene was absolutely awesome, but then 5 minutes later he's having a hand to hand fight with the whole team, it made absolutely no sense. He could have easily popped their heads off by looking at them.
Tim Blake Nelson, was being teased since he was casted as being the sequels villain, and would possibly turn into Mole Man in this film, which would have been true to the comics, there's even a scene in the trailers teasing it. In the movie we got, that doesn't happen, they nerfed him into just some cliche bad military guy who is bad for no reason, and Doom kills him right away.
The way the movie ends, with them getting their name, is Batman and Robin level of bad, and if Simon Kinberg actually wrote that he should never work in Hollywood again. It's literally something straight out of an MCU film, which goes against the whole tone the movie had for the first hour.
Another thing that makes the movie terrible, which I'm sure had to do with editing, Doom kills Dr Storm in front of Sue and Johnny, they react how they should, then the illogical final battle happens and they win and suddenly don't care that their father just died, they're celebrating, cracking jokes, figuring out what to call themselves it was far worse than Tony Stark cracking jokes after he believed Pepper died.
I think an honest and un bias person will see this movie had major potential, believe it or not, at parts I even thought it was great, but the last 20 minutes or so, turn this into one of the worst superhero movies of all time. I think most that see here will actually enjoy since the they're expecting it to just be a turd all around, it's nowhere near as bad as X-Men Origins.
Even still, with all its problems, I enjoyed the movie though, just to see what Trank was trying to do, and it was working. I know everyone here doesn't think F4 should be some Cronenberg monster movie, but the little that Fox actually gave us of that was the absolute best part of the movie.
I'm guessing Fox cut out the classic suits they were supposed to get, and Doom was supposed to get a a second suit which never happens. Due to all the complaints, Fox changed his name back to Victor Von Doom, and most of his story is stripped from the film. Trank's version might not have been as comic accurate if they would have given him a different name, but I can't see his version turning out worst than the Doom we got.
There's plenty of plotholes and illogical decisions made in the movie due to editing, and even still the movie is quite entertaining and unique up until the final 20 minutes.
Everything that came before the final 20 minutes was a about a solid 7.5 for me, the final 20 minutes is a 1.
It's hard for me to say if whether ether critics are being especially hard on this movie, there's so much good in it, I loved the cast in the first hour, they're all playing their roles just fine, then the second half they're giving over the top performances.
Holy crap, that was an awesome read. That ending sounds so much better and adds up with the first trailer. I didn't even was a F4 an X-Men crossover but that would have been a great way to tie them together.
After you brought the original intended ending, I realized another heavily promoted shot didn't make it in which adds up with you summary, Thing huge punch too the ground.
I think Jye is right, I should sue
Yeah, shame that it doesn't seem possible nowadays to make a superhero movie so bad that it won't at least break even. Fully expect overseas to save it from being a big enough loss that they abandon the franchise. *shakes head*sadly predictions are that it might do well internationally and might even get the budget back... international audiences always watch anything no matter how awful
Jack and Jill was huge in south america for some reason
Ah man, now knowing what happened really hurts.
Look at how they butchered Doom's appearance in both FF iterations (along with Apocolypse in AoA). These morons don't know how to create memorable costumes or reference the source material. If they did introduce Kang you can best believe they will ****-up his look like they've done with everyone else. So sick of these clowns having the licensing for such great characters.Hopefully we still get this guy in 2018, even without the FF.

I can't think of one visually interesting character from any of the X-movies that references the source material in a compelling way. Doom is probably the biggest eff-up of them all from any of the franchises (he couldn't be easier to do right). In regards to compelling villains I'd agree Marvel doesn't have a great track record either (hate what they did to Ultron) but generally they reference the source material for their heroes and villains better than FOX and Sony. Apocalypse is a perfect example. Shouldn't be human stature at all (and there's no excuse for it, given access to CGI nowadays) and yet they've got a guy in blue make-up playing the character, just as I predicted when the movie was first announced. Would much prefer ALL of Marvel being under one roof rather than pieced out like how it is now....but saying they've ruined every character is just crazy.
