I heard that Nolan said that the themes of the films were fear, chaos, and pain, respectively.
I don't have a source, unfortunately. I don't follow interviews.
Iron Man, Thor and Captain America (I'd include Incredible Hulk too) were good movies, but they were all too small. Avengers was the first one that was as big as I thought they should be, and in that respect, it was a landmark. It stood out, and you can see it for miles.
It was still the same basic quality as the individual movies. I think the Nolan Batman movies were of a higher quality than that. Not one of them contained the energy of Avengers, but what they lacked in action and humor, they more than made up for in depth of plot and characterization. The Batman trilogy was idea driven, and you rarely get that in comic books, let alone movies based on them.
