I think the plan was to shock you (making your UPS guys look at you funny would have been a bonus, but they should have known better). They knew they had to raise the bar considerably, and they thought they had a winner.

I just crushed what slim chance they had. Sideshow isn't going to love me anymore. They thought they would have their revenge. That's what they get. Should have just made the production figures look like the prototype...

Now that was a weird set up, it felt like an after the credits scene smack dab in the middle of a film. Poorly done too, IMHO.

And I agree, that would have been better as an After Credits scene... It was very out of place...
