Sorry, but I would never eat Smart Balance and other butter substitutes. Believe it or not I try to eat as much non-processed and natural/organic food as possible and the one thing I do not understand is the notion of butter substitutes as healthier. Smart Balance is a highly processed mixture of esterified oils mixed with other combining agents. Butter is much better for you because it is all natural and therefore the body is more equipped to process it.

That's cool Chinoz, but it's also full or Trans and Saturated fats. Not sure the body is any better equipped to deal with those....

Honestly though, you know what the best substitute is? No butter or butter substitute at all...

I think you misunderstood the intent of my post. It was merely meant to illustrate the absurdity of so many of the comments made in the double down thread, where the fact that there are worse things out there than the double down (and there are worse things, many of them) somehow justified consuming double downs as a healthy alternative to those other things.

I'm sorry if I offended you in any way.

nope, no offense. my post was more tounge in cheek than anything so it's all good.

Exactly. Even when I do use Smart Balance, I use it in very sparing portions. on the snack I'll be making later, I'll probably use much less than a teaspoon.

I don't even know how to begin to respond to this. Being "natural" automatically makes something better for you? Thanks, but I'll stick with Smart Balance.

Coming from a former nutritionist, yes it does. There are foods out bodies were built to eat, natural foods. Smart Balance, Benecol, and other substitutes are no different than artificial sweeteners. It's okay to have sugar and butter in moderation, without going to some scientist-made concoction to make you "think" your eating something natural.

I would go for the butter. I am not talking Paula Dean type eating, but if you want butter (in moderation) then butter is your best bet. In terms of substitutes, margarine is the worst because it usually has more trans fats than butter. Also important is to make sure the cows that the butter came from were grass fed, hence why organic butter is always my choice.

Now I feel like a hippie but I'm really not :peace

There is nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all. But you're also man enough to know that you like it in spite of it being bad for you (kind of like Dino and his booze ;)).

I have to admit, however, that the Elvis makes me want to :yuck because of the bacon. I might like to try one without the bacon, and grilled with a more reasonable substitute for the butter. In fact, that might just be workable. :D

I've had it plenty of times without the bacon. I love it. I do use butter though.

To clarify, I have had the double down and enjoyed it thoroughly. I also think eating right is more than calorie counting. And in some ways I do think eating a double down is better than eating a Healthy Choice frozen dinner with all kinds of weird ingredients and preservatives. Preservatives are the worst! I learned it's best to eat food that will go bad in less than 3 days.

Thanks, but as I said, I'll stick with Smart Balance. It has less trans fats and less saturated fats than butter, and I prefer the taste.

That's cool. Taste is subjective anyway. I actually prefer Spanish sweet butter to the salty butter we have in America.

I think the Double Down would be better if they eliminated one piece of chicken and stuck what's left between a biscuit. And I think this would be better if they eliminated a grilled cheese and stuck the burger in the grilled cheese. But I'm man enough to admit I'd like to try it. God help me. One day I'm going to have a grilled peanut butter, banana, honey, and bacon sandwich (also known as The Elvis) too.

If that's all I have to say to get back in your good graces, then hear this:

I freely and formally admit that the Double Down is bad for me, but I chose to eat them from time to time because I love them. :lecture

I don't recall anyone saying that the DD was a "healthy alternative." To imply that based on statements to the effect that there are worse things is a bit of a jump.

The DD supporters just see the singling out of the DD to be silly.

I agree with this.

Butter doesn't deserve the bad rap it gets. :ohbfrank:

Yeah, people are entitled to their opinions on food of course, but it seems many people are afraid of natural foods like butter and sugar because of the diet crazes that only count calories or carbs. Natural salts, fats, and carbohydrates are all essential to living healthy, we just need to control our portions better in this country. Oddly enough, buttermilk also gets a bad rap, and it's a probiotic with more health benefits than regular milk :lol.

Buttermilk...eww. My Grandfather drinks a glass of it every day. And he offers me a glass every time I'm over. :lol

Good carbs and good fats are good for you. This no carbs nonsense is silly.

So, basically, what I am gathering from the food gurus in this thread is that nobody really has the beginning of a clue as to what is actually good and bad for you.

Did I get that right?
