And Captain America specifically:

“Captain America…The cult of American hyper-masculinity is one of the worst things that has happened in the world during the last fifty years. Hundreds of thousands of people died because of this stupid illusion. So how is it possible to watch a movie called Captain America?”
I would be curious to pick his brain a bit more about this comment. McTiernan certainly is an interesting guy, though. I suspect many still don't catch the social commentary in Predator, or how really unusual Die Hard is as an action film. Of course, you can also enjoy his movies as purely straight action movies, but the fact that he was a more thoughtful and subversive than most other directors of that sort likely made for better films. Of course, he now seems a bit far off his rocker, but age can do that to people. Plus, his time in prison apparently had major psychological effects on the guy.

"A plague of irony" no less. A plague lads!! Jesus. :)

Self awareness is in really short supply around here. Many here utterly dumped this movie with bile and sexist loaded BS which many were all too ready to dish out so it's no end or irony that these same folks are now being so touchy. That is very definition of irony...perhaps not quite a plague though.

There is so much (blind) hate being thrown at the movie by people who haven't seen it.
It seems everyone and their brother or sister is posting a review in US and it hasn't opened there yet.
Bizarre behaviour. As far as I know there have only been critic screenings so far so either these people are just making up **** for attention or have a very unhealthy obsession with this movie.
:lol

The key phrase in you post is "as far as I know" just sayin. :wave

I'm not seeing he film on principle. They went out of their way to remake a film with male leads into an all female cast. I think that's just stupid. And inviting controversy, then calling people that don't like the idea, sexist.

There seems to be a push to turn existing characters races, sexual orientation, gender into anything other than white male heterosexual. And if that bothers you, you are suddenly a phobic, sexist, begot.

I for the record would love to see more diversity in the fiction I consume, BUT AS NEW CHARACTERS!

I'm sick of social justice warriors manipulating pre-existing characters, into different people.

The director of Die Hard is badmouthing the "cult of American hyper-masculinity"? The plague of irony-impairment continues.

I always viewed Die Hard 1 as the anti Hyper Masculine movie, it was sold as the anti Rambo movie where the hero was a regular cop who had fear and got hurt.

Now about those Die Hard sequels. :lol

"Plague of irony-impairment". Not just "irony". If you're going to misunderstand hyperbole, at least start from the right place.

As for the rest of that, I'd have to spend two paragraphs defining terms for you to even start explaining what's wrong with those sentences ... and, honestly, I'm not sure you'd get it anyway. Suffice it to say, you can't just shuffle-up terms you don't understand and spit out sentences hoping they make sense.

Sure, that's exactly how it reads. Go with that.

I always thought of Die Hard as the quintessential hyper-masculine movie ... for exactly those same reasons. McClane was a regular cop who, by sheer force of will and courage, wins. I can't think of a better 'hyper-masculine' movie than one that makes a regular American man into a force of nature. Same goes for the Indiana Jones movies, by the way.

I agree with some of your sentiments but technically the new Ghostbusters did invent new characters. So at least they get credit for not making Peter or Ray female or black. I do agree with the one pink haired internet chick that the best way to have made a "progressive" movie would have been to have had a new team comprised of male and female members.

That could describe Pee-Wee's Big Adventure as well.

You had preconceptions. "This is going to be great!" rather than "this is going to be bad" is still 'closed-minded'. You're just standing on the other side of the door. I'm not open-minded, and I never claimed to be. Self-awareness. Try it sometime.

I'm also not sure you know what irony means.

That's one way to look at it but I vividly recall Die Hard 1 being hailed as the anti macho movie with the moonlighting guy being soley responsible for taking down the Rambo type hero.

I guess it comes down to how masculinity is being viewed.

I'm going to guess that is from her "Ghost Fu" scene where she kicks ass John Wick style. I am surprised at how much good stuff I'm hearing about this film and how it's a lot better than the trailers made it look.

If you'd describe Peewee Herman as a 'regular American man' ... you live in a weird neighborhood. Heh.

SnakeDoc

Regular as in not being Rambo, or having any martial arts skills or tactical training. Not regular as in, "the norm" which doesn't really exist anymore anyway.

Point proven. Bait taken. :wink :lol

It's just a godamn silly popcorn movie the same as the original was supposed to be.
For gods sake the original team couldn't even make a good sequel.

Incidentally I guess I don't need to point out that every view in an open forum like this is an opinion?

Bingo! :exactly: :lecture

Hell, not even the original cast cares since they're in this. :lol

Yeah, it's just a silly movie. :thud:

Female reviewer who thinks all the females are fantastic and Hemsworth is adorable but the film's problems lie with the male director. Yeah, no agenda here.

Good tweet I just saw. "IMAGINE being furious/upset about a Ghostbusters film, though. Imagine how terrible everything in your life must be to arrive at that point."
