Yes, I cut the feet off. The main reason was to shorten the figure, though. I think you could probably jam the feet into the rotocast boots if you softened them in hot water, but they are rock hard normally so it's not like you're getting any benefit from having feet in the boots.

Did you cut them off at the break where the feet connects to the leg? And in doing so, should I still shorten the torso by butchering it as shown earlier in this thread?

Well, that was a point of contention earlier in the thread. :)

The issue is that the DiD figure needs to be shortened a bit, and there are at least two ways to do it. One is to remove that torso part. My shortcut method was to just cut off the feet where they joined the leg. If you don't mind the extra work, the torso method is probably better, since it leaves the knees in a more natural position (although you really can't tell at all when the figure is dressed).

Off with the feet it is then. Thanks for your help, amigo.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. this is sop proved by this thread. My fellow freaks, I EMPLORE YOU, under no circumstances should you throw away your DID gimli head! You see. i've had my toy biz gimli ever since they were in stores. I've long sense lost ALOT of his accessories, including his helm. So while i was stripping down the DID body today, I noticed that the Gimli head was molded in soft rubbery plastic, simular to what hasbro uses for their boots. So, after a few hours of looking at him, i took the plunge and carved the DID face/beard out of the head, leaving just the helmet.
Not only ddoes this helm FIT the Toy biz head, it fits it snugly, is soft and rubery so it will not scratch the paint, and it is extremely nicely detailed! also, on his head the bottom flares out appropriately, and makes his head looks suitably large and in scale with the hobbits. I will post pics tommorow. Trust me, this is the helm we want on him :)

Get those pics up ASAP. Tonight if you can.

oik here's the deal with these. I took these pitures quickly, and in bad lighting, also, I still need to repaint the helm, but with these you will get the idea.

Thanks for getting those up in a hurry. It's looking really good so far. So which TB head are you using? The "soft" or "rotocast"?
EDIT: Nevermind. I see that your custom is based on the green box Toybiz "soft" Gimli.

I just got finished chopping off my DiD hands and feet and I was contemplating tackling the DiD head sculpt, but wanted to see how yours turned out first.

I realy, REALy like it, but like i said, it despaately need s a repaint to loose the inaccuarte colors, and the fleshtones as well, but you get the idea :)

The rotocast boots fit fine over the feet if you cut off the toes. Chopping off any of the legs, if you've already done the body mod will make Gimli too short. Additionally, you'll drop the knee joint to about mid-shin level making any action poses looking stiff legged or awkward. If you don't want to do the body mod, I'll be more than happy to do it for you.

And the problem with using the softer helmet is it will stick over time and remove paint. If you don't have the TB soft helmet, which is closer in quality to what Sideshow would produce anyway, it's a fantastic substitute, but honestly, owning both, the TB soft is the better of the two.

Thanks for the insight. I don't mind getting some good hands-on training, so I'll make an attempt at the body mod. I'm pretty sure I could handle it if I take my time. I'm definitely still in the market for a soft Gimli, but I'm always going to keep my options open. If I fail at the body mod I'll be shipping the body to you. :D

Not a problem. If you get stuck, feel free to IM me via AIM or YIM. Both are available under the avatar. And if we still can't fix it, like I said, don't hesitate to fire it off to me and I'll do it for ya. Really, the hardest part is trimming down the stem on the neck to make it a post, which, you'll see as soon as pix returns from the dead so we can finish his project. :lol (BTW, PM'd ya)

I have not done what I wanted to yet this weekend. I ended up making a book shelf for Indy-1/6 size. Still love to see everyone working on him.

PM'd ya back. :D

That removed DiD helmet looks better than I would have thought. However, it's missing the little nub at the top of his crown. It also looks to be a little thick on his head. Definitely could use some dremmeling on the inside.

If it's fitting well, I'd say put the dremel down. It'll make a mess of such a soft material. Make a new front edge to blend the trimmed areas. Magic Sculpt would do it. Aves would do it. Even Elmer's Glue would do it. Then paint it up.

Anybody using an Xacto blade for any trimming: heat the vinyl first; you'll be able to cut it more easily and are less likely to visit the emergency room.

Sound advice, sir. I did indeed make quite a mess with the dremel and was sure I'd end up in the hospital when making incisions with the hobby knife. Turns out to be quite a dangerous sport.

After spending much of the night butchering the DiD torso and preparing the figure for a cosmetic overhaul, I've decided that I will put the project on hold until my 1/6 fat suit and chain mail arrive. In the meantime, is there a really good re-paint tutorial out there? How are guys attaching the "soft" Gimli head sculpt to the DiD body? I find this new hobby quite fascinating and fun to learn.

EDIT:
Nevermind. I keep forgetting that Google is my friend. https://www.onesixthwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=272961#post272961

Helmet wise...

The TB roto is too small, but it has the most accurate sculpt of the 3. The TB soft one is the nicest, I think, but the detail work is off and sloppy in spots. The DiD one looks pretty good cut out, but still not quite as good as the soft sculpt, imo.

What I ended up doing was cleaning up some o the sloppy sculpt work then cutting the more accurate front accent piece from the roto one and replaced that bit on the soft helm with it. So I ended up altering the helmet I thought I wouldn't touch anyways. :D Looks much better now and will be close enough to what I want when repainted. Pics soon.
