I was thinking that printing on the vest to simulate the quilting would be the best way to go. Same with Pippin's shirt. I do think that Frodo's coat is close enough to Merry's, if it can be dyed. Merry's shirt has a collar similar to Sam's and Frodo's is close enough to Pippin's.

Here are my thoughts. Printing the design is definitely the way to go on Pippin's shirt, using the same band collar shirt Frodo has. Merry's vest, however will look best, I think, with a design stitched into it using thread the same color as the shirt, similarly to how SS did the Gandalf PF vest.

I still have yet to find a material that has the right look but is tight enough weave to simulate Pipin's scarf. Anyone know of a good looking 1:6 knit scarf with a pattern? Maybe something from Hot Toys or (gasp) Barbie, just as a reference.

But my TB soft Gimli should be here any day now, and that's where I'll begin this quest, The Complete Custom Fellowship! :D :ring

Did anyone ever do a 1:6 version of Tom Baker's Dr. Who? Although I'd consider it sacrilege to buy him just to pilfer his scarf. He was, after all, the best Doctor. But if so, that's going to be a good option.

I'm not so interested in if a scarf can be taken from another figure but if a good looking 1:6 scarf has even been made by a company to see what they came up with. I'm thinking it's going to have to be a densely woven length of craft ribbon, fabric or hemp. :peace

Yay! Got the TB Gimli today so I can begin the heavy lifting tomorrow. Hopefully, will have the reworked head ready to mold by Mon. We'll see how it goes. The hair/beard and braid are sculpted in 2 different styles - and I think I'm going to go with the more detailed style the braid has. It'll be more work, but will look better in the long run and match up more accurately, for the most part, with what Sideshow has done.

It's ridiculous how much better the soft Gimli is than the roto one, most notably the helmet. The headsculpts are similar enough in size, but the helmets are very, very different. The soft helm looks to be pretty serviceable and will mold up fairly well if need be.

Can't wait to start on this sucker and put together the "perfect" Gimli. :rock

:D You have finally seen the light.

The arrival of Indy and the TOHT announcement has distracted me from this project for the moment, but I hope to get going on my own Gimli sometime next week.

Come on... the head, helmet and gauntlets are very useable. We've seen it. But that's about it.

You're too obsessed. :)

The helmet, yes, is solid.

The gauntlets need wrist articulation.

The beard is too short and the head is a tad small. Picky, yes. :D

Well, since we're building our own Gimlis, we can all make the judgment call about what is and isn't needed. Personally, I'm fine with the rotocast hands and upper arms since they do rotate, and you can do a lot with the articulation in the arms to produce various poses. I don't really plan to be doing a lot with Gimli other than having him stand there with his axe anyway.

The beard certainly is too short on both the rotocast and soft Gimlis -- it should be almost twice as long. But it looks good, and I know I wouldn't be able to sculpt a better one if I tried to make it longer. I'm willing to make some compromises.

I've got some extra hot toys wrists, i'm going to try to add in that articulation, I picked up a hobbit lothlorian cloak, ANd two fatsuits from toyanxiety ( do a search for fat) I got the same one pictured here a few pages back, and the one from the mall santa. going to try them both and use whichever is better. The roto helm dosn't look too bad n the soft gimli, but i'd rather have the soft helm. Wish my soft gimli had his helm. entropy, what do you think you'll charge for the heads and elms?

Last question, how do i go about getting the head off the soft TB one?

The gauntlets need wrist articulation.

I do like that on the roto. I'm torn there between the larger gauntlets on the 'soft' and the wrist-articulation of the roto.

Since I do not have the roto, I'll give the 'soft' a try and see if just twisting them on the stump works well enough for posing.

If you can hydrospan the TB boots larger, that would be great.

You read my mind on the HT wrists. I'm going to attempt to cut the hands off and attach ball joints.

The roto helm doesn't look bad at all, but it really is inferior in size and material to the soft. It does have the sculpted leather straps that the soft lacks, so that's something. I might try cutting them off and putting them on the soft just to see what it looks like, but I'm not too sure I like them.

Have no idea about any casts yet. I'd like to do some boots as well. Will let you know when that gets closer.

EDIT: Boots are going to need a resculpt. Hopefully, I can get away without the extra step of hydrospan by tweaking the sculpt.

Don't do what I did. I just plled and snapped the neck post in two. :(

Did you twist it side to side or just pull?! I just pulled mine right off. You won't be needing the neck piece anyway. But if you give it a straight, sharp tug, it should either pop right out of the neck socket in the head or the neck.

The good news is I received the TB "rotocast" and the DiD Gimli yesterday. The bad news is I also received what I thought was the TB "soft" Gimli, but it turned out to be a 6" figure instead.
