Just got the chain mail in today. Easy modification. When I can catch Pix online again, I'll give him the speil on how to fix it so that you can actually cut off the hands without it unraveling. Now all that's left is paint...

So the parts list is as follows: ToyBiz "soft" head and helm. Body is the modified DiD as are the clothes, harness and weapons. Soldier Story ODA Team Leader fat suit. The shoulder armor, gauntlets and boots belong to the ToyBiz rotocast Gimli. The chain mail Hauberk is from an IGNITE 1/6 Knight Hospitaller 2 and Sideshow Frodo's Lothlorien cloak with elven broach. Overall, he's not perfect, but not to shabby either.

Awesome job, brother. Exact same components I'm using to put mine together. Just waiting for the "soft" head sculpt, fat suit, elven cloak and Knight Hospitaller chain mail to get here. I was anxious to see how the chain mail would look and I'm not disappointed with the results.

Thanks bro. Yeah, the cloak looks a bit short, but I forgot to lay it down before the pic. It's actually more accurate than the outer robe. I thought about taking about 1/2 an inch off the robe, but my sewing capabilities are only limited to human flesh and I'm not really sure a baseball stitch would look the best on the robe. :(

It's looking good! What cloak did you use? IMO, it's too short. Doesn't Gimli's cloak almost touch the ground?

Not sure what cloak he's using, but I got a DiD Sam elven cloak from Toy Anxiety. A bit pricey for a small bit of cloth, but nothing is too good for my dear friend Gimli.

A bit of size comparison...

Soft Gimli got here yesterday, but I didn't check the mail until today. Removing his head proved to be quite the laborious task, but it's off.

I ripped it off the first time and the seam at the neck gave way fairly easy. Then, five minutes under a blow dryer and "POP!" the ball joint came right out of the head. Don't damage the "soft" too much. When you're done you'll be able to pop the roto's head on it and make another Gimli.

WILCO ;)

...

The TB soft head is certainly a marked improvement. Now he looks proportionally correct while maintaining anatomic integrity for the most part.

Man, this custom sure requires a lot of searching around. I've managed to track down and purchase the Toybiz soft figure, the DID figure, the Ignite mail hauberk and the Soldier Story ODA fat suit. All that's needed now is the Toybiz rotocast and I'll be ready to start on this project.

Technically speaking, I'll also need to find an extra Sideshow LOTR stand and elven cloak, but I can live without them for the time being. All told, I think I've spent about $60-$70 for everything so far (including shipping charges), so I should be able to complete my Gimli for less than $100. That's probably what SSC would have charged for the exclusive version, so it all works out.

Exactly. The good thing is that usually a custom figure will run you a lot more than one issued by a company because you have to either pick up the items loose, which are more expensive that way, or pay shipping several times over for different items purchased from different locations.

We got extremely lucky that we had the Toybiz and DiD figures to go to for the majority of the items. Imagine if they didn't even exist...:horror

All shipping included, mine was less than $90. I believe the end tally was something like $87.95. And the end result was more than worth every penny of it. He fits right in with the rest of Sideshow's Fellowship but has real wood and metal axes! Merry and Pippen would be nice to have, but I still think Gimli was most important and most deserving and should've been a natural choice over Faramir and Boromir. Some of the best moments in the films were his interaction with Legolas.

FINALLY got my DiD Gimli in today.

Got the neck fitted, body chopped and all dressed and fitted. Everthing took about an hour, just need to get the head painted now, but that can wait.

Fun project, thought it was gonna be an all day thing, but done in an hour :rock

Glad to have Gimli in the collection :rock

Glad it helped. :rock

I'll have a full tutorial on the shoulder armor and moding the clothing sometime this week too.
