If you couldnt predict where Avatar was going to go, somethings wrong with you. It WAS cliche. It was nothing more then any "Man Goes Native, CARE about the Enviorment" story, with awesome effects, and great action. James Cameron can make it work, it's super fun. But award worthy? No.
Like I've said before, what recent movie with a message hasn't already been told in some form or anothr previously???? There's a formula that makes a movie great, and win awards. And now some people seem to be criticizing JC for following that formula.
The last "original" movie I saw was memento, and before that was The Wall (without giving this too much thought). So all you guys (and gals) who think you could create something original that hasn't been told in some form or another 10 tines previously and captures the attention of the World..... Well, when that happens, let me know, and I will be happy to attend the premiere.
According to Arnold it's pronounced "Avadar."
Avatar is just like Titanic in that it has a simple story with great visuals. I like both movies but I doubt most of the people defending Avatar and its simple story would do the same for Titanic.
Well said Banny.I think the problem people are having with Avatar is that everything was so damn telegraphed. The story didn't have to be super original but it didn't have to be so predictable either.
Avatar fans...
Have you ever seen a deeper post than this? *Assuming you noticed the words under pew pew light.

I was happy to see both John Lithgow and Michael C. Hall win for Dexter. It was also great to see Toni Collette win. And Robert Downey Jr. gave the best speech.

The only thing I didn't like in The Hurt Locker was the scene with the one officer when he goes out into the field with them. I wish they didn't go the typical cliche route with how that scene ended.Avatar used a very specific formula though, and JC didn't even try to make it his own. The writing was the laziest I've seen since episode 3 (unobtanium? It sounds like a rough draft placeholder). You can use a formulaic story and make it your own. Look at taxi driver, man vs. Society. The hurt locker, man vs. Himself. It's taking a concept and pushing it's limits to new levels that make something award worthy, not taking the script from pocahontas, changing some names around and throwing half a billion dollars at it.

I think it showed though how he really had no idea what those soldiers are going through out in the field. He was SO out of place out there...though what happened was no surprise.
Would you believe I still haven't seen titantic? I really didn't know much about James Cameron until avatar came out. I think it was you who informed me of this "avatar" movie on the con floor during sdcc, remember?
I'm not a huge movie buff, so lump me in with the masses who just likes eye candy, but I am somewhat intelligent and all I know is Avatar is the best movie I've seen since the LOTR trilogy.
Maybe the story wasn't as in depth, but I was still moved regardless.

Whoever directed this show did an awful job. They kept cutting to cameras that obviously weren't ready, and some of the cuts were so fast you didn't know who was on screen. During the Best Actor category the camera was on Leonardo DiCaprio when they announced Jeff Bridges' name.
Not even Aliens or Terminator 2, man?
