I think he meant "plot" but we all know the joy of these films isn't so much with intricate stories as it is with the characterizations and action sequences. Great plots are a bonus, but I think GOTG established the characters well enough to warrant a sequel.

I remember when Jye said the Guardians of the Galaxy were only being put on the big screen to be fodder for Thanos in the Avengers team-up film. Somehow I doubt that will be the case now with how successful this has become.

Marvel probably wants stand-a-lone features for

Nova
Dr Strange
Iron Fist

I remember during the Capcom comic con panel couple years back a Marvel rep explained why they included those relatively obscure characters back into the limelight. Marvel intended big things for Rocket Raccon who was also featured in the game

Well Doctor Strange is already getting his own movie, Iron Fist is getting his own show, and James gunn doesn't like Nova much. XD

Well the plot is basically Raiders of the Lost Ark in space. I didn't get for one second that they were trying to hide that fact nor did I or apparently most audiences think that a bad thing. And I agree; endearing characters, witty banter, and sweet action are why we line up for movies like this.

:lol I think it's The Breakfast Club in Space with homages to 80's sci/fi action/adventure all over the place.

Or is it Footloose in space?

Or The Great Outdoors in space? :panic:

Just realised I was looking forward to this film for around two years and now it's finally here and I've seen it and loved it! But I won't get another taste of cosmic Marvel for around 3 years :( and 9 months until I get Ultron. I need something to fill the void, don't think I've ever looked forward to a film as much as this one, AoU is gonna be great and I'm really looking forward to Ultron in it, but all I really want is more Cosmic Marvel asap.

Yeah, that analogy works for me :lol Just no Nick Fury as assistant Principal character. The only connection to Raiders, to me, was the opening scene which had obvious parallels and played off of the expectations of the mysterious, bad-ass adventurer who ends up instead being a more purely goofy, comedic character.

I didn't get the impression from this film that the Nova Corps would be particularly important in the grand scheme of things in the Marvel Studios U, but you never know. Considering they did GOTG, a New Warriors movie wouldn't shock me. Hot Toys Night Thrasher FTW.

True, at no point did the rest of the movie feature a good thief, a bad thief and an army chasing a MacGuffin with godlike power that when opened at the end incinerated the bad guy but did no harm to the good guys....

It's not one or the other.
TWS had a theme and terrific character development.
That's what makes a good flick.
GOTG has neither.

TWS was great, a fantastic movie, but GOTG was better. It has shot up to my list of greatest comic book films ever made and one of the best action science fiction films I've seen.

Those are some pretty thin similarities IMO, considering GOTG was a sci-fi, action-comedy, buddy film, while Raiders was an action-adventure film based off of old movie serials. Folks have pointed out here how many of the Marvel movies share the same basic plot structure, and that the Nolan Bat movies all share similarities of that sort, etc. But your points are fair enough if that stuck out to you. To me, the spirit of this film was more John Hughes than Spielberg.

That's why I said it was "Raiders of the Lost Ark in Space" and not simply "Raiders of the Lost Ark." And remember, we were talking about the plot specifically, not the tone or pacing or anything. But you are correct; CA:TFA, The Avengers, and Thor:TDW all borrow heavily from Raiders' basic plot structure as well.

Matter of opinion.

To me what makes a good flick to me is that I leave the theater having enjoyed what I just watched.

GotG had that in spades, IMO.

:goodpost:

The only thing that matters to me is if I leave the cinema with a smile on my face or not.

I've done that each of the 3 times I've seen Guardians and that's despite my dislike of Chris Pratt's performance.

The movie isn't good enough to dislodge Avengers and Iron Man from my top 2, but it's a respectable 3rd place on my list of favorite comic book movies.

I noticed they had the Nova Corps in the movie but not the Nova FORCE, which is what our dear Richard Rider is a part of.

I would like to think, that after Ronan's attack, Nova Prime and the Corps start the Nova Force to take on bigger threats, like their elite team.

That's where Rhomann Dey's bigger role comes in in the second movie since he's the one who actually finds Richard Rider on Earth and recruits him to be the Nova we all know, want, and love. Least that's what I could see happening.

I could see NOVA showing up if they adapt the "ANNIHILATION" storyline for Guardians 2. It's actually the storyline that put Guardians of the Galaxy BACK on the map (and ramped them up for this movie). However, I could also see that Guardians 2 will be the final set-up for Avengers 3...with Thanos getting the last few Infinity Gems while the Guardians try to stop him. As part of his galaxy-conquering scheme, Thanos is seen as the lead of the "Annihilation wave" (instead of comic villain Annihilus) which moves towards Earth at the end...

But we'll see....the movie was awesome and the cast with stellar. Can't wait to see what's next. :rock

I'm gonna go see it again tomorrow night.

Don't get me wrong, i love the movie, but seriously....
that "dance-off" with Star Lord stalling Ronan. It didn't annoy any of you? That was the stupidest lazy script writing / baffling scenes in the whole movie (in a bad way).

This dosen't top Avengers in my book. But, 2hrs haven't flew by faster and more enjoyable for me all year.
