Im sure this would be ok and would seal it at the same time

i was wondering if an air canister wouldnt blow the dust off
based on how shiny it is now, im wondering if it doesnt already have a clear coat on it, sure did smell like paint/chemical or could just be the smell of the material itself

Air canister will work for the heavier dust, but the first layer tends to stick to the rubber and probably will need a wipe, that's what i do with my Tumbler wheels anyway.

Yeah just blow it away with air, good idea, or just use your partners makeup powder brush like I do ;)
I was thinking with the Plastikote as more of a way to stop degradation.

Blow the dust away and give it a wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. Move house if dust is that bigger issue.

Best to put it in a case or cabinet and avoid the situation altogether.

What degradation? Clear coating would crack and peel away. Certain elastomers can be painted with special paints, but they are generaly as flexible and tacky as what you're painting.

What degradation? what everyone has been talking about on this thread regarding the dome!!!
Thought maybe sealing it would stop the air getting to it thus prolonging its life.
I have sprayed clear Plastikote on my car after repairing a paint issue, around 3 years ago, been through all weathers and still its not cracked or flaked away. good stuff.

:lol I wouldn't worry, this ED will more than likely outlast you.

Sure is. :rock

Have you physically inspected EDs dome? Silicone rubber is cheap, non-toxic, highly durable, stable as a rock, and one of the most commonly used polymers around the world.

Having said that, IR analysis and a specific gravity of (approximately) 1.75 indicates that EDs dome is made from durable silicone rubber. The convoluted joint boots are also made of silicone.

I would worry more about dust than the polymer breaking down.

Nope, I haven't made it into the lab to do any infrared spectroscopy on it, but silicone is rarely used in toys and comparatively little in regards to to other polymers because as a manufacturing material it is expensive.

But really all you have to do is go to any casting supply such as Reynold's or Smooth-on and compare costs of the variety of casting materials to the cost of silicone. Silicone is at least twice as much as everything else. Not to say that Silicone is astronomical or anything, but when you are making thousands or millions of anything, a relative cost of being "twice as much" is a lot.

Unfortunately I had to cancel my Ed-209. Just too many things on my plate right now. Hopefully I can pick it up for around retail at a later time.

Not for use on high impact styrene, leather, Styrofoam and vinyl.
DANGER! DANGER! What if the new dome is a vinyl material? This sealer could eat into it.

I've already stated that I'm going to make a silicone mold and re-cast the dome in rigid black resin.
However, for those who want to protect the original dome without replacing it entirely, here's an idea:

Remove the soft dome, and carefully wrap it in thin cellophane. Tape it together on the under side to completely seal it in. Then, get some acoustic fabric and cover the dome with that, to give a realistic surface for display. The whole thing can be fixed in place with thin double-sided tape. The original dome will be sealed and protected from oxygen and (mostly) light, as if it had never been removed from the box. If you can find a cellophane product that is both thin and opaque, even better for blocking out the light.
If ED-209 falls or rolls over forward damaging the acoustic fabric, just replace with new fabric, and the original dome is still sealed in and protected.

Bummer. Been there and feel your pain.

Hope your situation gets better man! Surely a piece that's not to be missed!
