I wish it bombs. Really.
Not because I hate it. I don't hate it, I don't like it either. If anything, I'm 'nothing' it.
But it sure does open an even wider door in terms of HT ripping us a new one with their constantly rising prices. The way things are going now, the next 'regular' licensed release will be $299, a price tag used to be recognized with PF and LSB.
So yeah, I wish it a total and complete failure. :(

Maybe they figure it's a unique and artistic enough departure that the only way they can ensure a profit when few will be interested is to raise the price to $360*. Think about it this way: you either love it or hate it. There's no reason to consider those in the gray areas because they've done nothing but thoughtlessly complain for reasons unknown to them, like vareika has pointed out. With that being said, if it's a pure black-and-white situation, those who want it really want it. Hot Toys is aware of this and priced the Samurai Predator accordingly. They know only a handful of people will be enamoured enough to buy it and to such a degree that it would be worth $360 to them.

I, personally, 'nothing' it. It's definitely an interesting move on the company's part and, as I've said before, it'll be cool to see just what the final piece looks like and how it'll come together both artistically and mechanically.

*This wouldn't be an economically-sound idea in any other context, but based on the responses we've seen here, Hot Toys knew their fanbase and made a good business call.

All are valid points - I'm just worried that before we know it, HT will slap a $400 on Vader. And that is a figure I will HAVE to get...

I think that's what they're counting on. :lol

In all seriousness, I wouldn't expect a move like that quite yet. While it's certainly possible (and hugely profitable), this Samurai Predator marks the first time we've seen Hot Toys do anything like this. I wouldn't start speculating until we see what they've got up their sleeve for the next year.

oh hell no...that would be pure evil of them to do something like that. Imagine how marvelous a DX Vader would be...

And how expensive -- especially if they skip the rubber suit treatment and do what SSC brilliantly did. There's a reason their Vader is doing well in the secondary market. I'll wait until they tackle the ESB or ROTJ version, though. For the sake of consistency, I'll look soley to Sideshow for my Star Wars needs. :)

for what it's worth, i think this looks rubbish. for a ht fig.

i get that it's an artist's interpretation. i dont mind out of cannon designs. and i always love samurai design. i also love takeya's works, very nighmarish, i'd even say gigerish.

so on paper, a samurai era predator as imagined by takeya would sound like a fool proof masterpiece. but looking at the pics, it's like i'm looking at a 7" s.i.c fig, not a 12" ht fig. frankly, i think ht and takeya are mismatched. their respective styles just dont gel well.

I think this design almost completely subsumes the signature details of what signifies a Predator. If I hadn't known better, I would've just assumed it was an Oni (Japanese demon or Ogre) in samurai attire.

Really, with the helmet on, it's only the shoulder cannon that hints at this thing being a Pred. The display stand and xeno bits seem more like a desperate attempts to remind us of what this is.

Poorly executed design, and I'm saying this as someone who likes both samurai armor and Preds.

now that you said it, yeah, with the masked on, this could pass even as a regular human samurai. what i find to be the big sin though, is that even with all that painstaking details on the armors it still looks toyish. takeya's sculptures always look great as statues, but here it seems the need to force articulations out of his sculpt bring down the overall aesthetics. fig looks stockish and cartoonish even with the realistic detailings. so it's like looking at two different aesthetics that dont go well together. that's my impression at least.

Can't see where it says this thread is dedicated to praising this figure and nothing else. As much as those that like this figure can discuss it's merits, why can't those that don't like it discuss their perceived negatives?

I own HT Chopper, Celtic, Scar, AVP Elder, Original P2, P2 Elder, Lost Predator, Wolf, P1, Machiko, Beserker, Falconer, Tracker, all three AVP Alien variants, Dog alien and Royce. I don't consider myself a fanboy as such, but I'm comfortable with the familiarity of all of the HT Pred releases. And maybe that's the problem for me, because I hate this figure with a vengeance!

It has the capacity to make me lose the ablility to articulate. It's all wrong, colour, design, aesthetic it's a total departure from the accepted Pred look. Now a lot of people are loving that fact, and I can understand why as it is in it's own right an amazing piece of work and as a fantasy creature it is brilliant. But a Predator, especially a HT Predator? I can't reconcile it with what has gone before.

To me it's almost on a par with what I felt when I saw Lucas had replaced Sebastian Shaw's Anakin force spirit at the end of Jedi with the one of Hayden Christiansen.

Phew!! Rant over, having said that, if you like it and are getting it I hope it's absolutely amazing and I'm just being a conservative old git who's afraid of change lol.

This is the way it should be done. Say you dislike it, your reasons, and move on. If you really hate it, then it would be logical to just leabe this thread be. The figure is not gonna change, there are no accuracy issues, nothing.

But people like Larja thing just keep coming and just say, 'I hate it because of the goofy armor'. Then comes back saying 'it has horse teeth'. Then comes back talking crap about the base. Then comes back saying he wants a fairy pred. Then comes back saying the same thing over and over again.

But yeah, if you like the traditional movie based Preds, then I respect that. Is just the constant Trolling that tends to get boring.

When it comes down to likeness and staying true to the material, there are no complaints.

I guess like it was said in the last page. You either love it for it's uniqueness or hate it for its difference.

Hey man, I apologize for this, but it's trolls that ruin threads. Many have already said that they like it, others said that they have not.

We, that like it, keep discussing things about the figure. The rest that said they did not like said it once and left, but the Larja thing keeps coming talking crap about the figure. Once or twice is fine, but man, all the negative things about the figure he/she posts are getting annoying. That is considered trolling I believe.

The reasonable person would just stay away from things they don't like.

Sorry again, let's just go back to discussing the figure.

:goodpost: Indeed

Can't see where it says this thread is dedicated to praising this figure and nothing else.

Well there's a difference between saying they don't like it for this or that reason and repeatedly returning to bad mouth it and those who do like it over and over with simple sarcastic comments

any idea when this is slated for release?

June in Hong Kong, so likely mid/end July in the Americas

Well, the only announced figures I'm waiting on are Jack Sparrow due in December, Classic predator in January, Boba Fett in Q2, and then this.

So if no Sideshow 1/6 DC figs, Hot Toys Metal Gear, Hot Toys Hulk or Hot Toys Way of the Dragon figures are announced, Classic, Boba and this Pred are the only figs I'll get next year.

That's being selfish IMHO. :nono Think about of those who'll be getting this & paying a hefty price using their hard earned cash cause they really appreciate the details on it..and you wish this to fail? :slap

How sure are you that the next MMS figure will be on the $300 mark?! :cuckoo: I believe HT considers a lot when it comes to pricing their figure and not just because of the profit they're going to make. :monkey1

First I don't like the fact that he will cost over 300 bucks, for what for the difficult production? I don't like the face at all but the armor is just killer. If they redo the face I would be interested but only for a good armor? Sorry HT, thats not going to happen.

Not a big fan of the direction the artist took with the mouth area, but overall its pretty "different" and I'll admit is still one mean-looking bad ass. Also would like the dreads to be thicker/longer. I'm not familiar with the artist, what else is he known for?

:exactly:

Same with the turds on facebook saying the Green Lantern figure shouldn't be made cos they didn't like the film, they don't consider those who want the figure at all.

They're not buying it so it's not afecting them in the slightest, but wish to ruin it for others.
