I'm sure the box isn't a major factor in the price.
Having a nice, artfully designed box is a good way for a manufacturer to show pride in their product. If what's inside is really an awesome piece, then it deserves to be housed in an equally awesome package.
Yeah, that was my point earlier - nice in principle, not so good on a practical level. But that wow factor starts to fade away when you're looking for a place to store the damn thing . . . Afterward it just feels unnecessary. If it were the embossed '89 Batman logo oval, I'll be honest, I'd probably lose my ____. It would be a cool box. The problem is, STORAGE.
If I'm paying $200 for a figure, it better be packaged well. I don't care if I'm going to store it away.
I doubt we'd save much, if anything, if they came in cheap-o boxes. These fancy boxes are probably only adding a buck or two per figure. Things get real cheap when they make it in the thousands.

I wish they'd all be packaged in the foam. I've seen paint ruboff on the clamshells. And, foam would eliminate the need for much of the plastic wrap, such as around the face and hands etc. The DX's seem a lot better packaged in terms of protection.
I mean the soft black foam.
Yeah. that's good stuff.
But sharp edges will tear it
Then be careful with it silly
That's it right there - a combination of fashion & function. You can still have a well packaged figure which accomplishes 100% safety of said figure without it being all artsy fartsy.l
