I recently re-watched '89 Batman after not having seen it for many years. I saw it in the theaters as a kid, and though I was a fan, I wasn't a "superfan" and didn't have must nostalgia for it. So, I think I can watch it without too much pro- or anti- Burton or Nolan sentiment.
I don't think Burton meant for his Batman to be treated seriously as in, serious real-world seriousness. I'm not even totally sure he meant for it to be treated very seriously as art. It seems like he was trying to create a fun comic book movie that explored themes and characters that comic book movies had not explored before. And he did so in very unconventional ways, casting an actor I doubt anyone else would have thought of as the lead.
It was a similar kind of reality that Beetlejuice existed in in terms of the surrealism behind everything. You were supposed to relax and enjoy it for what it was. Like others have said, I believe it was a successful movie at what it tried to do. Not in all ways. The pace is a bit awkward here and there. The score and atmosphere gets a bit too melodramatic from time to time (even by Burton standards), and I think some of the casting could have been better (not in the main roles really, but supporting cast), and of course, making Batman a wanton murderer is never a good thing post early 1940s or whatever.
But, Nolan's films also have their flaws. I still don't get why it's not OK for Nolan Batman to kill, but it's perfectly fine for him to allow Ra's to die (when he clearly can't rescue himself) at the beginning of Begins. Same difference if you ask me. For such a supposedly complex character to make such a simplistic distinction. . .anyway.

Wow, this one looks jet so good. I really want one, but ht will still come out with a new robocop, and the city hunter figs... Damnt hot toys, you guys make it too tough to decide. The and Jack are a must have next to Chris reeve superman. I can only hope they will do a returns version with Keaton head and a pfeiffer catwoman.

And the most important question of all...what happened to all Batman's pet bats after Begins? Did he have them put down humanely, did they die of smoke inhalation or did he move them all into his swanky new bat apartment in TDK?

Not really, I mean, I grew up with the Keaton bats, saw the films quite a few times - but I never considered them great movies, just cool movies where it was fun to see Batman in live action
The Nolan films for me anyway are great films - among the very best that have come out in my lifetime anyway, for me.
But to each his own - of course there's flaws with the Nolan films but nothing major IMO.

Batman 1989 and The Dark Knight aren't as good as Batman and Robin.
Burton and Nolan aren't anywhere near the level of visionary that Joel Schumacher is.
If Hot Toys were to announce Batman and Robin figures, I'd cancel my '89 Batman preorders and get rid of my Nolan Batman crap.

I find the bats being used in Begins a very interesting topic.
Why did Nolan use them?
Was he forced to use them in his realistic reboot?
Why are they missing from TDK, there were many instances in TDK they could've been brought in.
I wonder if they will be brought back in TDKR.

Well, it's hard to compare Nolan and Burton batman films, since they are so different. I read that Batman Returns is closer to Burtons vision how he would like batman to be. And that makes sense, more gothic, with more bizarre and tragic characters. Whereas TDK and begins Nolan wanted to creat a more realistic batman. I think they are also style wise very opposite of each other. Just look at the suits: Nolan is more functional, with all the moving plates and all where the Burton one is more to create a striking image. And the sane with the batmobiles, one is a tank, the other more sleek.
But I guess they both took elements from year one and the Dark knight returns as well as killing joke. The bats used in begins are straight out of year one.
Well, I prefer batman returns, and batman begins. Batman 89 is too long in some parts and TDK I can only watch till they blow up the hospital. After that it goes on and on....
Anyway, this us a really cool figure- and what the he'll, I'm gonna get it. My first ht batman!

My issues with the 89 film
- although I like Keaton as Batman...I also don't at the same time. He's a small man! Not exactly beefed up either. With curly hair! He wears a polo neck jumper and glasses at one point! On the plus side though I liked his acting as Wayne and Batman. In the suit he was cool and his Batvoice was good.
-the Vicki Vale romance is sudden and gets really overdramatic very quickly
-The Joker's plot against Gotham is a bit crap. Plus after he is found out and brings his balloon parade to the streets why is no attempt made by Gotham police to arrest him or did I miss it?
-Batwing can be shot down by a handgun, a joke handgun.

I like Returns less, but it does feel like a more complete Burton vision of Batman IMO.
All that stuff is easy to understand if you get in the right mindset IMO. It is a surrealist dreamworld, where logic only takes you so far. That's why a minor flaw in Nolan's films is much more jarring. If a cartoon character jumped out of the tv screen in Burton's batfilm and started beating a character over the head, it wouldn't be so strange.
PLASTIC ENEMIES
Just admiring the level of detail HT put into this. Especially the armor. They nailed the sheen and texture of the actual latex armor made for Keaton. Not too shiny but still reflects some light and ever so slightly textured. Perfect!

I'm 6'2 and look more like "comic book" Bruce Wayne (though I have lighter hair) than Keaton and Keaton is still a better Batman then me. His looks alone are enough to convince people that he's Batman.
I don't know what Keaton looks like without his shirt off though. He seems more like a Bruce Lee type of Batman, like the one from the earlier comics than AHNULD, (Arnold as Batman, what a great idea).

Joker's plot is something Joker would completely do. He's the "the world's first fully functioning homicidal artist". He destroyed works of art because they didn't fit his "new image" and killed a ton of people with smylex after dancing over their corpses. So of course he's going to want to euthanize Gotham by giving them a ghastly grin in their death. Make these people look just like him. He trolled Gotham by giving them money and killing them!
Yeah, you're right about the Police thing though. I figured they just didn't know where the float parade was going to be and it took them a couple of minutes to get to the location. There's a deleted sequence where the Joker poisons half the police force (before the parade) but that's not included.
Agreed. It's a cool scene and a cool joker gag but I think, logically, it's pretty stupid. Just as dumb as Batman missing him (unless he intentionally missed him).

Watched Batman '89 quite recently and what I took from it, was that it was funny as hell and I love it now more than ever.
