Bigger question is why do the Skywalkers go against the grain with their waredrobe? Why not the traditional tan/brown gear?
Was too lazy to see if someone responded to this, but the gist is that it's narrative symbolism. Anakin foreshadowed his decent to the dark side and Luke was struggling with the possibility of falling to the dark side. So the latter is there to make the audience uneasy in their assumptions. This is also why, if you're showing anyone Star Wars who wants to see them all, and who has never seen it, the "machete cut" is the way to go.

Yup. Exactly. Lucas tells us this in some behind the scenes interviews. His colors start out white and innocent in ANH and progressively get darker to brown in ESB and ultimately black in ROTJ to symbolize his possible decent to the dark side. It's a way for filmmakers to show you character development without a single word of dialogue.

People generally interpret and perceive things better through what they see than what they hear. Films tend to be rife with symbolism. A lot of it is intentional and not coincidental.

He spends a lot of time in orange too though.:lecture

Leia goes from all-white with taped down assets to bikinis. Not sure what the thematic message was, but I can confirm I perceived it better by seeing it.

Black in ROTJ to symbolize his possible decent to the dark side.

I remember seeing the trailer for ROTJ the very first time, and one of the most memorable images was of Luke (in his black garb) standing next to Vader in the lift. It suggested he had turned and joined forces with Vader.

People seem to have the same fantasies with Rey... and she hasn't even dawned anything dark yet.

I think what people want -- well, boys -- is Slave Rey.

Trailer did its job then.

Yes. And he spent all of the Star Wars Holiday Special Orange.

Me too!

I've always wondered how the film would have been if luke had accepted vader's offer to help him kill the emperor in ESB and rule as father and son. That could have been cool :lightsabe

He's using the subjunctive verb tense. Expressing his hopes and desire for the DX treatment.

Right, thank you TonTon. I do not master English well enough, so I am sometimes victim of the translation of Google.

Then Luke would have been Michael Corleone and Star Wars would have been The Godfather. Lucas was rejecting his mentor's work to present a more optimistic vision and destiny for his alter-ego.

I have the beautiful Yunshil ROTJ Luke, but I can't wait for the HT version regardless of the number of accessories.

Jedi Luke and ROTS Anakin are the 2 I have been really waiting for. One down.

I saw a documentary (it may have been on A&E) where upon learning Leia will also become a jedi, Lawrence Kasdan considered this scenario. It would have made sense because even if Luke fails, Leia could become the main hero. In the early to mid-80s, this would have been a groundbreaking approach to female protagonists in film. Lucas didn't go for this idea but it would have been cool.

I can't help but wonder if Kasdan thought about this with Rey for TFA.
