People always have high expectations of their favourite line/characters. Few sculpts live up to the high expectations of fans. Everyone remembers the knock-out sculpts because they're few and far between. If HT has nailed Leia but missed the other three, then that's about par for the course.

hehe....I stand corrected :)

I think the funniest thing is that "Ben" hid with Vader's son on the planet Anakin grew up on...
Then... He called himself Ben Kenobi.
If i was on the run on Anakin's home planet, i would call myself Rufus T. Farquharson the third...
I know it's like a scene from Family Guy, Vader getting everyone to cross reference the name of old dudes on all the planets that go by the name Kenobi...

True but I also think that Ben knew how much pain that planet caused him and with everything that happened to him there he knew it would be the last place Vader would come looking for him. Plus Vader had no idea he even had a son much less know to go looking for him on his old planet where he was a slave.

I also wondered why he called himself Ben. Another question never answered.

Was he hiding? I thought he was keeping an eye on the sand people.

I used to always think Obi-wan was a designation like the droids too, but I also thought stormtroopers were robots and never understood their disguise. Guess I've always liked robots.

I wonder if it was ever answered in the old comics/books. The new comics don't seem like they'll do much of an effort to bridge some of these specific gaps that we've all thought of.

The new Vader comic for example takes place right after ANH, which means there's an opportunity to find out why Vader's suit changed. But the costume is immediately the ESB costume as the artist was using the SS Deluxe figure as a model. :slap

Good point. Given how powerful he became, perhaps he (Anakin/Vader) saw the planet of his humble roots as being somewhat emasculating.

I like how everyone who argues their opinion here thinks they are right and speaking the truth. But everyone is only speaking their own truth and point of view. "You will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."

No I didn't say that, I can, do and have painted better heads than hot toys myself. I know exactly what I'm talking about. I also think there are artists out there, both here on the forum and some of the Asian artists who can paint even better than I can.

If you actually read what I posted and not hurled out insults and commentary that wasn't thoughtful, I said that no paint job will make it look more realistic than the hot toys head because of the lack of detail and refinement in the sculpt, the scale and the fact that the original sculpt which does have a great likeness is dated and toy-like.almost cartoon like by comparison.

I've seen skiman's paint jobs of this. I also have one of these painted by Josh Small and it's also an unbelievable paint job. And Trevor grove is still one of my favorites. With all that next to the hot toy figure, it just doesn't fit in anymore, it sticks out like a sore thumb. It's a dated head sculpt now.

Do I still like it for what it is? Absolutely. But it's not the same caliber. It won't be replacing the hot toys in any realistic way to sit on the shelves with the new figures.

I've said people need to let it go because of all the human hot toys heads, all of which have major problems with likeness Old Ben is actually the best of the bunch and in my estimation pretty darn close in likeness.

For the record hot toys head needs modding too... I've painted it a lot to fix the color of the beard and bring out the likeness in other parts.

Do you have a pic of the retouched HT head? Contemplating doing myself.

And yeah - the SSC is a better likeness but it doesn't have enough detail in the sculpt so does come across slightly caricatured, and what everyone seems to keep forgetting is to get these heads repainted will cost you nearly what the whole HT figure costs if you go with the level of painter you'd need for Ben (as a figure that relies very heavily on the head due to simple outfit/accessories.) You'd be insane to buy a SSC Ben and upgrade body, hands etc and get it repainted - you'd pay hundreds and never get it back.

It really is pretty frustrating how the SSC/HT thing seems to play out time and again - the SSC often has a better likeness but lacks finer sculpt detail and is pretty much always ruined by the paint (right up to the last few human figs) and HT sculpts rarely seem to get above 8/10 in likeness but look like shrunken down living people in terms of paint apps and sculpt micro-detail.

Personally, I feel that even some of the top painters on these boards produce work that looks like a beautiful oil painting of the person, not a shrunken down version of the living person themselves like HT apps do.

I come to this thread to talk about my Ben figure because I'm happy with it and to talk to other collectors who are happy with it or that like doing mods to improve an already great figure. No figure is 100%.

I have to ignore the people who come to this thread just to bash the figure or talk trash about it saying that they think something else is better or that it looks like somebody's stunt double. I just don't have the time or energy to bash what other people think. Especially if I don't even have the figure in question. That would be like me going to the Noland thread and saying its crap. I don't own it. I don't have any intention of owning it but why would I waste characters and data with bashing someone else's opinion. Let's agree to disagree and I hope that you find a more positive outlet for your frustrations other than a doll forum.

Agree totally with this.

As I've stated before, I believe that it's extremely hard to flawlessly nail down someone's likeness in 1/6 scale; some likenesses are easier to capture while others seem to be more difficult just because of unique features. In terms of likenesses, I'd say HT on average hovers right around a 7-8/10. They're usually at least decent to very good. There's only a few sculpts I can say that are a 9.5/10 or above (MoS Jor-El and Christopher Reeve Supes are a couple that immediately come to mind in my personal opinion), and there's only a few times where I can say HT dips below the 7-8/10 average to where a likeness is just utterly horrible to the point you would have no idea who the person was if it wasn't attached to the body.

Like I've also stated before, I feel that if you were to show someone just a lone sculpt and they are able to guess who it is without a second thought, then that particular company did a sufficient job on acheiving someone's likeness.

I can see all the imperfections in the OT sculpts but that doesn't stop me enjoying them immensely. If it did I wouldn't waste money collecting them or time talking about how terrible they are.

:goodpost: :exactly:

I enjoy them very much, and whenever I have company, they seem to as well. They usually spend at least 10 mins. looking at all the various characters and sculpts.

I don't know if there were two different head sculpts for obi-wan. it looks like a different sculpt from other photos I don't know if there was updated version before these sold out. it just looks different from photo to photo maybe it`s the lighting or shadowing :dunno
