Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

I watched both the Burton films yesterday to see if my feelings on this film have changed. I have to say while the first is still awesome Batman Returns still is overall a very weak sequel. I think if it was a straight up Batman and Catwoman film it would be a lot better, but the stuff with Penguin and Shreck really drag it down. There are a lot of cool things stylistically about the film but it overall doesn't hold up.

I love Christopher Walken as an actor – but god he hammed it up in Batman Returns... his performance was awful.
Burton's films were great, but too 'fairytale' ultimately. He deserves the credit for paving the way for all future Superhero movies though... without '89 Batman taking the subject matter 'serious' and making it dark I don't think we'd be getting spoiled with the movies we are today.

Wouldn't you think that HT is losing that "magic" it once had?

I don't think they've lost their magic. Look at what they've given us in the past year. Robocop and murphy, commando and a marty mcfly. All 80's grails well for me anyway. I think they are now a bit too much focused on marvel lines but what you gonna do? That's where the money is and that's where they'll stay for the foreseeable future. I think as long as we get the more 80's grail figures i.e die hard, aliens colonial marines and hopefully more Robocop and batman then hot toys are still good in my books.

For those complaining about the lack of the glider. Take another look at this picture and imagine the span of this thing and the size of the cabinet needed to display the figure.

Not a problem for people with figures stood on shelves instead of crammed into cabinets ;)

Yup, I agree with this. I was never a fan of penguin :dunno

I haven't seen anyone balance three characters against each other so well in a movie since returns. Even Nolan had to give two fave the short stick

This is very true.... except that Burton's "story" is anything but. It really makes no sense most of the time. You could balance any number of characters in a story that just plods along in a makes-it-up-as-it-goes sort of way.

BR really is just a series of skits loosely put together is some semi-logical way.

I'll be picking up the two pack for sure, not sure if I'll be keeping the Wayne figure as is or if it will be used for a kitbash though. Wonder what body they are using for him?

Yeah really the story of the film doesn't even make a lot of sense and is filled with plot holes. Penguin was abandoned as a baby but yet he seems perfectly literate and can can write. Also him running for mayor makes little sense. The people of Gotham being so accepting of a sewer freak who just emerges from nowhere essentially and rallying behind him is so far fetched even by comic book standards. I've said it before but Shreck being the one running for mayor with Penguin pulling the strings would have made way more sense. Then you have the whole aspect of Penguin and his crew taking over the Batmobile which they apparently were just able to obtain not only blueprints to, but also were able to override its security system really easily to sabotage.

The Catwoman stuff works well for the most part playing off the duality of Selina and Bruce. I feel like that's the strongest part of the film even though there are a lot of absurd moments with Catwoman too (namely her whole origin and supernatural aspect of her character).

Overall I view the film as disappointing and always wished we could have gotten another sequel starring Keaton worthy of the first film. Unfortunately that'll never happen.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

I wasn't a fan of the first film because of Nicholson's Joker. Too old, too paunchy, too hammy. And I hated the idea that he killed Bruce's parents. Oh yeah, and that Prince music...ugh. Talk about a movie dating itself the moment it was released. And Alfred letting Vicki Vale into the Bat-cave? No, doesn't work for me. I didn't love Robert Wuhl's character either, or Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent. I thought Batman Returns successfully jettisoned the campy elements in favor of something much more pure, while still keeping the otherworldly flavor of Burton's Gotham intact. I thought all the actors in Returns did much better work than their counterparts from the first movie, with Michelle Pfeiffer's performance being especially noteworthy.

I also liked the Penguin running for Mayor sequence, and before anyone thinks it too outlandish that a freak like the Penguin was able to gain such public notoriety and support so quickly, just look at our society today: 25 years ago, would we ever have thought people would create successful careers for themselves as television celebrities by releasing sex tapes? If it were up to me people like Kim Kardashian would be working at a McDonald's drive-thru. Instead she's a millionaire celebrity. Think of Burton's Gotham City as an alternate universe version of our own world. To them someone like the Penguin is an entertaining underdog who deserves a shot at redemption. But maybe they would have run Kim Kardashian and her ilk out of town.

I agree with all of that :lol

I dont agree with whoever said CW hammed it up in Returns. He was given a **** role, i mean he talented as hell and yet all he gets to work with is an evil business man. I don't see how he could have done anymore with that character.

Eh. The Dark Knight Rises isn't without fault, but it at least has a coherent plot. I like aspects of Batman Returns but it isn't a great film at all in my opinion.
