What I don't get is why people are so put out by the enthusiasm of others. I mean, people will knock TDK because of how some rabid fans react to it. I don't get that. It's two separate things. Somewhere I shared my theory about the 'hipster syndrome'. I shall restate it here. :D

Hipsters like small independent bands. Then, when that band's audience gets larger (i.e. "mainstream") they stop listening to that band and move on to other bands that nobody has heard of. Then that band gets radio play and they stop listening and move on to other obscure bands, etc.

People in the DC section are obviously Batman fans. Then when a movie like The Dark Knight becomes hugely popular it turns them off. "I'm a real Batman fan, and all these Nolan/Ledger nincompoops come in and ruin what used to be cool". Like I said before, it's just a theory.

Personally, if I like a band it doesn't matter if they have 3 fans or 3 billion. If I like a movie, I don't care if it's underrated or overhyped. Other people's reaction to art/entertainment shouldn't really have a bearing on how the individual feels about it.

:goodpost: Well said,Maglor.

I feel the same way. I'm too old to care about who or how many people like something. I don't argue about it, I just don't care. It's so liberating. I wasn't always like this, in high school I had to be the guy who hates popular stuff. Then in my early adulthood, I cared to much about what others thought. Now I'm free from all that bs.

Man, you really took the words out of my mouth. This fits me to a T. When I was in High School I was that scary death metal guy. I think that's the image I wanted to put out. I listened to a lot of evil heavy music and I wanted everyone to know it. Even though I went home everyday and listened to The Beatles.:lol And what you said about being too old to give a damn, I've said those exact words from time to time. Much more easy going now that I'm older...

Maglor, are you saying Nam is a hipster? :panic:

:horror :nono I never said that!

Yes

J/K

Or am I?

I can see where you're coming from with the hipster analogy, and I'm sure there is something to that. From my POV, I never cared less about certain licenses when they got insanely popular (I remained a Nolan fan after Begins, even though I was a huge fan prior to that), but I would become less interested in going to threads where there were too many overzealous fans. Like I said, it just seems overbearing somehow. I'm not saying any of that is bad or wrong, it just gets to be too much for more casual fans. Same way with the Predator threads in the Aliens and Robots section, or with the Joss Whedon or Lord of the Rings sections where most guys there are members of an informal kind of club.

I get it. But a private eye-roll is enough for me. :)

P.S. I'm in the Lord of the Rings club.

OK since i'm a snob now:

It's ok Kara, you can be part of the informal Nolan club, you can have part time status :lol
:yess: all I ever wanted was acceptance :monkey2 *leaves to find Gordon-Levitt Dark Knight Rises avatar*

Now why do I hardly ever find you in the Terminator threads? What gives? :monkey3
:monkey1

A-dev : Terminator
Void : Nolan Batman

Analogy of the day :monkey1
The analogy is appropriate :D

I'm really not trying to rain on anyone's parade here. Just trying to explain a point of view. I understand some folks don't understand it, otherwise I wouldn't need to try to explain it, right? But the actions of Difabio, Nam, and some others is coming from this sort of place. And I get it to some extent. You see guys with Bane tattoos before the movie is even released, and some think it is awesome. Some. . .don't so much. And in full disclosure, I'm excited about the Nolan film, as well, as evidenced by the fact that I do post in Batman threads and buy the figures. I think he has, hands down, made some of the best comic movies ever.

Said Bane tattoos have definitely gotten one of those private eye-rolls from me...

And the irony of any geek posting on this forum being critical of others for their own brand of geekness is not lost on me :D

But yes, private eye-rolls would probably be the more tactful behavior. :)

I understand it aswell. For a time I felt the same about Nolan Batmania, but then I realised I was a bit hypocritical given my own obsessiveness with Terminator. Thats not me making an insinuation that you guys are hypocrites as I haven't noticed any of you being fixated on any one thing. Anyway increasingly it makes more sense for me personally from a financial standpoint to focus on Terminator and ease up on everything else much the way that Void is doing with Batman. Presently he has more discipline than me, I'm still buying other stuff but the objective is there. Diversity in a collection is nice and would be ideal but I can't afford to aspire to that anymore or else there is potentially no end, ever, to what I could buy....actually more accurately to what I could 'want' to buy.

Didn't I read that he has disappeared off this site. Maybe this is why, he knew this inevitably wouldn't go down well..a truly blatant recast

Hmm well not exactly, basically his main thread has been deleted as a result of the recast Rainman and refusal to respond to requests to explain that behaviour

He's still welcome to post an explanation (not sure how he can explain away the recasting and selling of recasts), as he's not banned yet.

He (they?) got called out for recasting Rainman's Fight Club sculpts, and their thread was deleted by the admin because of it. I think that's initially why he didn't bother showing much love for the site anymore. But this could have been another reason.

While you are correct about it being a cheaper alternative, recasting sculpts is generally frowned upon by the collecting community, particularly in regard to custom made sculpts. It is probably technicaly illegal to do so in regard to the HT sculpts. However, I think there is much more negativity associated with their "cloning" the Rainman Fightclub guys than this. Folks seem to shrug when they see an HT sculpt being recast, rightly or wrongly.
