Pretty sure it was you. . .and void :lol

Nice redirect.

If you don't actually have an example of what you're talking about, there's no shame in admitting that you're wrong...

The Dark Knight Mania was over the top, what with the avatars and signatures and custom figures out the wazoo

Avatars and signatures are over the top? Really? This is a DC Comics forum, we collect Batman figures - if you don't see a lot of Batman/Joker/TDK avatars and signatures, then people are doing it wrong.

Dropping $1,000 on a figure -IS- over the top, but I feel that's less about Ledger/TDK love and more about having too much money and getting on the bandwagon/buying into the whole "limited collectible" and exclusive community garbage that sometimes floats around. That's not specific to Ledger or TDK, though.

and people talking about it being the greatest movie they had ever seen

TDK was a great movie - chances are, some people are going to think it's the greatest one they've seen, making it their favorite. That doesn't mean that it's the reason for their existence - it just means they have a favorite movie.

Do you have a favorite movie? If so, does that mean it's the "reason for your existence?" Is any mention of, or reference to, that movie from you now "over the top?"

We're already getting a taste of that for the new film, and I expect it's just gonna get worse.

We are?

Oh, I see. You're one of those hipster-type killjoys who think that if other people like something, you're too cool for it.

Here's a tip - don't worry about what other people think about things. Don't feel threatened by the fact that some people like something that you also happen to like - that's no reason to turn your back on it. Other people are irrelevant.

Power to you if you care so passionately about a movie to behave that way

Behave "what" way?

You've yet to give any concrete examples of this abnormal "behavior" you keep referencing - unless you mean stuff like using TDK signatures and avatars on a message board dedicated to DC comics figures.

Which, believe it or not, is entirely NORMAL and EXPECTED behavior.

If you spent all day working and observing people in a restaurant, would you be justified in arriving to the conclusion that everyone you see there is obsessed with food?

haytil. . .I think you may need to sit down and take a breather fella. You want to draw out an argument that I have no interest in wasting energy on. But I said my piece. Deny it or accept it, I don't really care.

But yes, if a person had an avatar and signature of a hot dog, posted about hot dogs all day, said that they wept after the most recent Oscar Meyer commercial, etc., then I might say they were a bit overly fixated on hot dogs.

Fair enough. I don't care all that much either - I just figured since you posted it, you'd be interested in the discussion.

Unless they were posting in a forum dedicated to Oscar Meyer Weiners...

Pretty sure it was you. . .and void :lol

The Dark Knight Mania was over the top, what with the avatars and signatures and custom figures out the wazoo, and people talking about it being the greatest movie they had ever seen, etc. If you couldn't see it, then you weren't looking. We're already getting a taste of that for the new film, and I expect it's just gonna get worse. Power to you if you care so passionately about a movie to behave that way, but when it gets overbearing then it's a turnoff to some.

What I don't get is why people are so put out by the enthusiasm of others. I mean, people will knock TDK because of how some rabid fans react to it. I don't get that. It's two separate things. Somewhere I shared my theory about the 'hipster syndrome'. I shall restate it here. :D

Hipsters like small independent bands. Then, when that band's audience gets larger (i.e. "mainstream") they stop listening to that band and move on to other bands that nobody has heard of. Then that band gets radio play and they stop listening and move on to other obscure bands, etc.

People in the DC section are obviously Batman fans. Then when a movie like The Dark Knight becomes hugely popular it turns them off. "I'm a real Batman fan, and all these Nolan/Ledger nincompoops come in and ruin what used to be cool". Like I said before, it's just a theory.

Personally, if I like a band it doesn't matter if they have 3 fans or 3 billion. If I like a movie, I don't care if it's underrated or overhyped. Other people's reaction to art/entertainment shouldn't really have a bearing on how the individual feels about it.

Unless they were posting in a forum dedicated to Oscar Meyer Weiners...

Kind of a good point actually. :lol

Man after reading a handful of these last replies, the only thought that comes to mind is, "Why so serious?"

And for the record:

TDK is not the reason for my existence (contrary to my rabid fandom behaviour :lol). BB and TDK are just two of my favourite films of all time, and the fact that they are about my favourite cartoon and comic book character is icing on the cake. I can scarcely imagine a film 'working' for me as well as these have, TDKR has a big task ahead of it.

And secondly, spending seeming large amounts of cash on customs has to be taken into context - some people like buying stuff from a variety of different lines. Me on the other hand, I prefer spending more on just a few of my absolute favourite characters. That's why my figure collection is pretty much exclusively Nolan's Batman stuff - sure I am tempted to step out of that and buy some really cool toys that HT or EB or some custom artist puts out every once in a while, but I've kept my discipline and that means I can save that cash on what to my eyes are clear upgrades to stock figures, in the form of custom heads, dios, clothing, etc.

I could care less if my customs are exclusive or one of a kind - the only thing I care about is trying to have the closest representation in 1/6 of the source material.

If some people want to call that snobbery, well I could care less

I feel the same way. I'm too old to care about who or how many people like something. I don't argue about it, I just don't care. It's so liberating. I wasn't always like this, in high school I had to be the guy who hates popular stuff. Then in my early adulthood, I cared to much about what others thought. Now I'm free from all that bs.

You're talking about new In Flames aren't you :yess:

I still love them, though I do miss the old In Flames

I call void's behavior snobbery.

And Maglor, are you saying Nam is a hipster? :panic:

I can see where you're coming from with the hipster analogy, and I'm sure there is something to that. From my POV, I never cared less about certain licenses when they got insanely popular (I remained a Nolan fan after Begins, even though I was a huge fan prior to that), but I would become less interested in going to threads where there were too many overzealous fans. Like I said, it just seems overbearing somehow. I'm not saying any of that is bad or wrong, it just gets to be too much for more casual fans. Same way with the Predator threads in the Aliens and Robots section, or with the Joss Whedon or Lord of the Rings sections where most guys there are members of an informal kind of club.

What if that hot dog was made by Hot Toys and the commercial directed by Nolan?????????
