I agree. Like I said, I didn't love him, but I didn't mind him either. I and 2 were WAY better than 3. I'm guessing 3 made people really dislike him. He was a bit of an a hole in it at times.
I agree, but it makes me a bit sad. Not to sound like a stuck up film snob (I'm not), but a lot of casual movie goers don't realize that an actor's job is to basically be a puppet; they do what they are told. Sometimes, they've got enough clout, or the powers that be just plain like them enough, to make big suggestions and changes and such. But I just really doubt that it was Tobey that made Spider-Man 3 suck. Not that that's what you're saying.
My mother in law, for example, HATES Tobey Maguire now. Why? The dancing down the street scene in Spider-Man 3. I always try to tell her that it most likely wasn't Tobey's decision, and she shouldn't HATE the guy over it. But she doesn't listen. It's just because, with movies, we don't see the directors, writers, producers, studio executives, etc. We just see the actors, who are sometimes the people with the least amount of say on set, and so it's easy to put all the blame on them.
With all this said, I really didn't like Tobey as Peter/Spider-Man. I was about 11 when the first film came out, and I hadn't read Spider-Man comics prior. So I actually loved him as Spidey in numbers 1 and 2, because that's all I knew. Now, I'm a pretty big Spider-Man fan and I feel like Tobey was a total and complete miscast. He ain't no Spidey.
