Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

I wonder if he'll be rocking the same suit in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. That'll determine whether I get this or not.

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

I ended up really loving the MOS suit so I hope they continue on with it. Though I would be open to minor alterations, like a brighter, more traditional colour scheme and the Superman glyph on the cape.

You'd think so as the only need for a new suit he has is for DC to sell more merchandise, i have faith DC won't be as money grabbing as Marvel and keep the same costume for more than 1 film

It would make sense for him to be wearing the same suit, since it is Kryptonian and the ship he got it from was not only the last of its kind, but has now been destroyed. And what a colossal WASTE that was...

But who knows what they will do in the name of "novelty."

I'd actually prefer for it to remain the same, the new one never is quite as good as the old. We saw this with Spider-Man, the original suit was The Bomb - and all subsequent incarnations never quite measured up.

As for the red shorts..... no. This costume should not be tampered with.

Who says it was destroyed?
I'd be willing to bet that Lexcorp got the contract to clean up the city and that they have "appropriated" the remains of that ship...
:wink1:

Technically his suit is a vintage Kryptonian House of El suit, its 20,000 years old. So with the ship most likely destroyed, he couldn't get another Kryptonian suit. He would have to make one himself or have Mother Kent help, which both has happened in the comics. Using the fabric he has or could be something in the ship he came to earth in which both scenarios have been used in the comics.

Im all for it being the exact same, i loved the suit since day 1 :)

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

I don't really want a new suit as i like this one. But if they make any changes, I want it to be more like the new 52 suit.

Gross! I like the overall design, but HATE the priest's collar and red belt. The MOS suit took the basic idea, and vastly improved on it.

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

That little collar would be vastly uncomfortable, and men most generally don't like uncomfortable. Women don't either, but they are more willing to put up with discomfort if the item looks good enough.

The 52 suit still has him wearing briefs, albeit blue ones. I read an interesting article once about why Superman is consistently portrayed wearing briefs on the outside - along with many other comics characters of course - speculating that it was because we as a society need to make sure such characters are safely reined in, so to speak. Bah, humbug!

The priest collar is ok to me. I was speaking more about the way they use the red to break up the blue of his uniform. I personally love the MoS costume. I hope they do not change it, as they left the Batman costume unchanged from TDK to TDKR. But I also understand studios rarely leave things as they are. Got to sell toys.

I always thought that it was to do with circus strongmen/high fliers/acrobats dressing in cape, top, tights and trunks...after all, Superman is all three rolled into one.

This is what I read too. That it came from circus strong men and weightlifters.

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

^^ Yes. The creators of these characters wanted batman, superman, etc. to be instantly recognized visually as "Strong Men". At the time these characters were created, circa 1938-39, the circus was huge. Not unlike movies or concerts today. Those images were ingrained in our culture and psyche. So it made sense to give these characters an unmistakable look to show that they were indeed "super" by giving them "strongman" shorts and boots. A lot like wrestlers still wear today.

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

There's a practical reason for the shorts too: without them, you could easily see the details of his super junk under the spandex. That's how the material works.

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

If you watch the New 52 costume closely, you'll notice that actually, he doesn't wear briefs, but the outline vaguely ressembles the shape of briefs, and not accurately.

Notice that the line at the side of the "briefs" isn't straight, that it turns upside. My interpretation is that it's not really a brief, but actually part of the surface design of the kryptonian material that his costume is made of (which is not fabric, as shown in the next scan).

Here you can see how "puts on his costume" or rather, how the costume extends on him. It's something made from kryptonian technology found in Brainiac's spaceship, and not fabric:

Also, he doesn't have a "priest" collar. Priests have a closed collar with a little white square, while Superman's collar is open.

The bit about the circus strongmen is true, that was the idea back then in the 30s and 40s, when they designed the first superheroes. But later it just became the standard look, and the reasoning for it was lost.

In the 90s and 00s they no longer had any meaning, and most new characters were being designed without them, and the most traditional ones started following suit.

I'm fine with this. If a concept/character doesn't adapt to the times, it becomes stale, and stops being relevant. Superman has struggled with that at times, and the look in the New 52 universe is a step in the right direction, IMO.

Of course, you can never please everyone, and a lot of people still don't like the look and want the return of the briefs, but to me, they no longer make any sense.

Re: MMS200 - Man of Steel: Superman Collectible Figure

Those pics look great! This is the first Hot Toys figure I pre-ordered, but I'm going to try and get the Christopher Reeve one before this one arrives.

I'm going to love so much having both of them next to one another. Just can't wait! :panic:
