I really never had a huge problem with the Ewoks or Return of the Jedi in general I guess. It was less dark than The Empire Strikes Back and a bit more kid friendly but I don't view it as the start of the downfall of Lucas/Star Wars like some do. Its still overall an enjoyable film and a good end to the original trilogy. The problem in my opinion started in 1997 with the special editions of the original trilogy which in turn led to Lucas making endless changes every time the trilogy is released and of course 1999 came along with The Phantom Menace and the start of the prequel trilogy.

oh you DIDN'T did you? Well here you go Mein freund:

Honestly not to entirely discredit him but I think that while he had some good ideas other people executed them better on film than he does or did. The original trilogy was more of a collaborative effort whereas the prequel trilogy was basically Lucas and a bunch of yes men and women. Even with the Indiana Jones trilogy I'm convinced that Spielberg kept him in line. Not sure exactly what happened with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but that definitely felt like a more Lucas influenced film.

If you read the transcripts of the Raiders script conferences between Lucas, Spielberg and Kasdan, which from memory took place around 1977, a lot of the best stuff is coming from Lucas, he's very much the main man, and you get a sense that he's at the height of his powers. Everything went **** up for him creatively after Empire.

Wait, t-i-t-s is a swearword? Wow. My five year old says **** all the time. I guess I should be jumping on that.

Yes. Lucas was a genius. For a time.

I don't have an issue with the prequels to be honest. I enjoy them for what they were. And at least they kept Star Wars alive for another generation.
