You don't have to be physically strong to be a man.

You don't have to be straight either...

No, this has nothing to do with one generation lamenting the young on account of some knee jerk historical reaction. History ebbs and flows according to the cultural primacy of reason vs. the cultural primacy of emotion, and a man who allows his emotions to rule his mind has no right calling himself a man.

A man has to be strong not to be a wussy, which is what this thread is about. A wussy is a combination of a wimp and a *****. A wimp is someone who is physically weak. A ***** is a coward. Someone can be a wimp and not be a *****, or be a ***** and not be a wimp.

Being influenced by some emotion is to live with passion, which is necessary to be a true man.

To be a quintessential man is to be masculine, and to have masculine leanings, not feminine ones. Since gender is determined by physiology, so is manhood, and hence, masculinity is determined by acting according to the design of that physiology, and not to contradict it.

Well, thank you for your profound insight. It's almost as deep as the reverend's epiphany that men have cocks and women have *******. Almost.

All I was trying to say was that what is considered "manly" has changed dramatically throughout history. So when you say that men aren't real men anymore you're really saying "men aren't real men compared to what is considered manly in this particular snapshot of history."

Couple that with the rose-tinted glasses each generation wears and you have people lamenting about the "good ol' days" when men were real men. Even worse is that we are using fiction to find examples of when men were men. Do you really think the rough and tumble old west cowboys are accurately portrayed on film? More than likely, they had their own complaints about their grandfathers' generation when men were "real men."

For me, what makes a man is the same as what makes anyone a decent person: wisdom, compassion, inner strength. Stepping up and making those hard decisions. The excellent point mentioned before about not being ruled by emotions. The emotion part includes not resorting to violence without a real damn good reason.

That's my 2 cents.

So what makes a man is a consensus of opinion from any given era of history, and they're all right? People have different opinions so it's impossible to discern truth from one age to the next?

Also, art expresses abstractions. It does not convey historical detail, but it does convey historical fact. What people believe from one time period to the next can be clearly read in the art they prefered.

When pixletwin is right, he's as right as it gets.

No, really. He could see you coming from a hundred miles away, and he called you for exactly what you are.

It amazes me how truly gifted a judge of character he is.

Now I'm wondering if I'm really a man. :(

*looks down at pants*

I THINK I'M ALRIGHT.

Who cares if they're right or wrong? What is manly is nothing more than an opinion, and that opinion has changed dramatically through the ages. There is no truth other than if you have male sex organs, you're a man. That's the point. If you say men aren't real men anymore, you're just making a generalization based on a specific general opinion on manliness in a specific time in history. You might as well be arguing what's the best colour.

I'm pretty sure that just makes you a male. Justin Bieber might have that stuff too. :dunno

Might.

:lol

This sounds like something a woman would say.

And blue is the best color.

If collecting dollies is not manly, I don't want to be a man.

Pink is the best colour.
