Same for me. The figure has to at least be part of a film, book or some part of pop culture that I like otherwise the toy would be meaningless to me. I wouldn't ever buy a figure that was just fabricated out of the blue, no matter how cool it looked, that I couldn't relate to anything.
That's a shame... there's some awfully great stuff (like Sideshow's own The Dead) that isn't part of a media merchandising juggernaut....

Agreed, but I see the point too. Most of my toys are from nothing at all, but I see where the "movie/comic" only based collector comes from, I used to be one!

What I relate to is the over all design of the toy. I have some that are from nothing that remind me of so many other things, it creates a dif. type of connection.

i agree but not so much because i don't think non-cultural figures have no value and don't look cool - it's mainly to maintain some consistency in my display (i'm very anally retentive like that). and it's always good to have a limit and rules on what i collect.

otherwise, i would be screwed - i would buy EVERYTHING. if i collected comic figures I'd have all of medicom's marvel comic figs and most of their japanese ones too. if i collected music-related figures, same deal. so i stick to movie figs only.

I only get figures/statues of my favorite characters and the piece(s) has to be the best out there for me to even consider it. :D

I'm gravitating more and more towards this way of collecting mostly because of space constraints than anything.
Although with all the cool 12'' figs Hot Toys is coming out with as well as SSC statues it might not happen.

I don't think Sideshow is carrying these guys.

I doubt it as well but never say never, I really didn't think SSC would ever get the Rocky HT Figs and then next thing you know they're all coming over...

MR has the Disney license and imported the Medi Sparrow. I think if anyone will bring them in, it will be MR.

true, but before the rocky figs were announced sideshow already had a rocky line going with the bobbleheads, busts and statues. so it tied in nicely. i'm a little p!ssed about it coz i had to import them from HK when they 1st came out and it cost me a whole lot more. and before sideshow announced this, i already put down a deposit for creed and drago from the same place:monkey2
but i don't think jack fits in with any of their existing lines. does he? i've heard elsewhere that this won't be available outside asia.

Well, if MR does get them, it'll probably be the same price as Toys2, so I just put my order in there, I love Jack Sparrow collectibles and this is deffinately a must get, can't wait til week 2 July for him to ship :)

That's pretty much how I now approach the hobby as well. For example, I'm not the hugest Robocop fan in the world, but I had to have a Hot Toys ED-209 because it's so freakin' AWESOME!

I'm holding off until I see producyion pics. So far, Jack looks too bulky, and I'm not seeing a huge leap in the likeness from the Medi. Feng was an interesting character, but not $140 interesting, I don't care how nice the sculpt is ( and it is.)

I'd love top see Barbossa. He and Jack are the quentissential pirates of this series to my mind.

Indeed, I actually found myself taking a liking to Barbossa, they wrote some good qualities to make him likable in AWE.

My collection represents what I love - the movie, the characters, etc...that I love. I'll never have anything in my collection that's based on a series/book/movie/character that I don't care for.

I like the HT Jack, but I'm not interested in Feng. He was a pointless character, IMO. Why they decided to do him instead of Barbossa is beyond me.

Are the planning to do more than just these two? Does anyone know?

This is what bothers me about companies....I want more than just one or two Pirates characters. I want a line. Give me Barbossa, Elizabeth, Norrington, Will, Davy and Tia to go with Jack....please?

I'd like to see a larger line for these movies, too. They definitely deserve it!

But at over $100 a pop, I'd be extremely picky about what I got. I'd propbably just stick with Jack and Barbossa, maybe Jones, and Elizabeth in her final battle gear if she was done EXTREMELY well!

It's not just the likeness, the the whole rest of the figure. The clothes, belts and accessories put the Medi to shame.

I agree about the quality of the individual pieces, but taken together, the figure looks rather bulky....

I feel that way from this picture:

But then this in-hand picture makes me feel better about the bulk factor...

....won't be able to know until I get it in hand, but I'm leaning towards a Medi-HT kit bash anyhow, so no matter what I want to get one.

I'd have to mirror your comments there, however if you look at the official image his jacket isn't over his shoulders correct. Notice the way it bubbling? It's being pushed off the shoulders by the hair. Where's in the 2nd shot it's been fitted correctly under his hair. Thus making a more slim appearence.

IMO. :D

I think the a big advantage of the HT version of the Medi is that he has a more lived-in feel. Whereas the Medi (which I own and really like) is far to clean and pristine looking.
