I've said it before, I own the entire line of Flintstones movie toys, including several promotional displays that were used in McDonald's and in movie Theaters. The combined value of it is probably less than one HT figure nowadays, but I like the film even though it's not that funny. I really like the production design and costumes. How I wish a good company could make a 1/6 scale John Goodman Fred Flintstone. Still hoping Blitz Way will make him.

Anyway, the rest of that 90s list is awful. I have soft spot for Dennis the Menace, only because Mr Wilson looked just like my grandfather and he made me a slingshot just like the one used in the film. I still have it.🤗

Yeah, he was very crafty. He made it from a tree branch, polished it, carved it, made the straps/tubing cutting rubber from a bicycle tire and a leather pouch to hold the rocks. That thing still works after 30 years, but the rubber is starting to break, so it's now just a display piece.

I remember every art dept person in LA wanted to go out and look at those Flintstones sets while it was filming. I wasn't hugely impressed.

As if predicting my reaction, I remember the day I was heading out there I saw Liza Minelli on the WB lot without any make up,:horror and heard Annette Benning screaming at her nanny (as I was trying to talk to my girlfriend on a payphone close by - my gf's like "f--k, who's that screaming?!" Me - "Um, Annette Benning"). :lol

I loved the idea of a live action Flintstones, but the resulting movie was such a letdown. Maybe with more of today's level of CGI they could do a better job of visualizing it. Can't imagine a lot of the Flintstones social content has aged very well though.

Rick Moranis looks like he has bad constipation throughout the whole movie, but you can see how they would have been so excited about Goodman as Fred.

That's crazy. It's the kind of scene you'd see in a movie about showbusiness. As for the Flintstones movie sets, I didn't know some of the houses were around until a few years ago. When I found out about the set, I was planning to visit the place, but it was taken down, the whole Bedrock street. 😣

:lol

It seems a lot of people don't like the movie and the cartoon. In fact, despite being a huge financial success, the film has been mostly forgotten. I only like it for superficial reasons. I find the world fascinating. It's colorful, and the costumes and vehicles look cool. John Goodman wasn't a fan of the film either. He didn't even want to play Fred Flintstone, but Steven Spielberg more or less made him do it, and to this day, Goodman doesn't criticize the film, he never did, but he's honest about why he did it and he feels embarrassed by it.

Nevertheless, he was perfectly cast in the role and did a perfect job. Rick Moranis was an odd choice, but also an obvious one because he was so popular in the 80s and early 90s. I thought he was ok. He kind of looked like the cartoon and kind of sounded like Barney. Stephen Baldwin was a better Barney in the awful prequel tho.

As for a new version with modern technology, it wouldn't be good because The Flintstones weren't a great concept to begin with because it's a one joke gimmick using the Honeymooners template and characters, but set in the stone age. A new film would lack the charm of the practical sets and creatures. It would be more or less the same one joke film full of unnecessary CGI. The Flintstones should stay in the 20th Century, where it belongs.

It does seem to be a pretty forgotten movie. Can't say I've seen much mention of it in many years. I used to love that cartoon though - the world and even just the bright colors.

I always find it interesting that some movies that were massive hits (commercially or critically or both) in their day can become completely forgotten even 15-20 years later, whereas other movies that did less seem to remain in the consciousness much more.

I'm also fascinated how some movies of the past say 25 years have become so dated. They are 20 years old now, but the Austin Powers movies feel like from a very different era now - really not sure how they'd do another one of those these days. Quite a few of Jim Carrey's movies (though I still like D&D) seem dated now too - something about his persona and the type of comedy.

American Beauty is another forgotten film that's probably very dated. It was huge when it came out and it won a bunch of Oscars.

I still like the first Austin Powers film because it's a good parody of the Bond films and the nature of the story dealing with a 60's character now in the 90s is going to date the film no matter what, but I didn't care for the sequels too much tho.

I saw that in the cinema but I haven't seen it probably since it first came out on VHS. It's never played on TV over here come to think of it.
It never plays anywhere, period. :lol Ironically, I don't even own the film, despite having a bunch of merchandise. I love the poster by Drew Struzan. :)

The teaser trailer was cool too, going from animation to live action. I saw it in theaters and had no idea the movie was coming. 😌

It's got only 8 thousand views.

It is so strange to me that you guys -- both with pretty good taste generally -- like The Flintstones movie.

The cartoon was great. Not the movies. Goodman should be as embarrassed by Fred as Clooney about Batman. I wish I was friends with them so I could tease them endlessly.

Well, I'm aware the film is bad. At this point, I just like the iconography and the merchandise. It was clearly a movie that was meant to be a big hit with lots of company tie-ins to sell products, nothing more. I still have the McDonalds glass mugs and toys. Even the toy line bombed, because it was a Flintstones toy line :lol , but back then everything got a toyline. Even the toys were strange because the heads were weirdly realistic, for the time anyways, and the bodies were cartoony, but I like them and the packaging.

What's hilarious is when you buy old toys, they usually have an old price sticker on them, but a lot of the Flintstones toys will have 3, even 4 stickers because different stores kept lowering the prices.

Flintstones movie sucked. Would have been a perfectly cromulent 5 minute sketch on SNL or something but it made a terrible 90 minute movie. I was so bored in the theater.

You know what movie is also completely forgotten but holds up? Dick Tracy. It's basically Sin City in color. One of the first true "comic book come to life" movies. I think people didn't like it cause it was marketed as the next "Batman" and it was nothing like the 89 Batman.

That's one toy line I didn't get into for some reason. I liked the film when it came out, especially the villains. My favorite was and still is Flattop. Unfortunately, Dick Tracy the character wasn't very interesting, imo. The film also lacked action. It's a nice looking film with lots of cool costumes and villains, but it would have been better with more shootouts, and scenes of the bad guys doing stuff, instead of standing around talking. I wouldn't mind a remake or a Netflix series in that same colorful style, not grounded and realistic.

My exact problem with the film. Boring. No great set pieces. And Pacino was just silly. No threat.

Good choice with Flattop.

Never had any interest in The Flintstones live-action flick (I think I maybe caught it once on TV, not even sure if I finished it), didn't like Dick Tracy either though I did see it in the theater. I enjoyed The Rocketeer though.
