I'm chiming in a bit late but I have to say, This was the worst of the Marvel movies (starting from IM 1 when they got serious)

not only the Mandarin thing but Tony being a hero... after a few days of this movie sinking in I realized Tony did nothing heroic. Sure he fought bad guys but thats a different heroic than Im talking about. specifically saving the people on AF1... He saves them and they all applaud... he wasn't even in the suit, no self sacrifice of anykind. then when the final battle came around it was Jarvis who was doing everything not tony. (in regards to all this I had hope Marvel would have used an extremis tony like in the comic, so he would be coordinating and using all those suit with his own mind, would have been way cooler)

The one heroic thing I will say he did was throw the suit on pepper instead of himself,

Just my thoughts

:exactly:

It was some weak sauce.

Especially considering what came before . . . :gah:

Still better than The Dork Knight Retires, though.

so how would he have gotten those rings? the only magical object that has been on earth has been the cosmic cube. if Mandarin had those magic rings and used them, then why didnt other realms come and attack earth? Thor said it himself that SHIELDS tinkering with the cosmic cube is what brought Thanos attention and sent Loki to earth to get it. so if they make another IM movie we could have a Mandarin that everybody is asking for since they could show him get those magic rings

If memory serves, in the original comic, he finds them in a crashed space ship.

I am hoping that the Mandarin twist is a giant ruse in itself, the Mandarin playing Trevor playing Killians Mandarin.

No. You just simply disagree with his opinion. Ain't a thing else.

One man's brilliance, is another man's "meh-ness".

Was that Shane Black as the bomber outside the Chinese Theatre who Jon Favreau bumped into?

And what we got was pretty hilarious.

It was, and I honestly believe will go down in movie history as one of the best kept movie secrets prior release and one of the ballsiest moves by a movie studio on how a main villain was handled.

But I would've preferred the twist to continue with him going back to being a baddie just because how freaking creepy and menacing he was, my favorite Marvel villain, the first to surpass Loki in these sets of movies.

His goofy drunk character would've been even more awesome had he converted back to Mandarin. In essence he would've still been telling the truth, he's an actor alright, one with talent for superior deception.

Here, let me be a little creepy myself, Sir Ben's performance as Mandarin/Trevor was so delicious I didn't want to see him go as the baddie, this dude deserves a freaking oscar.

Yes, I said delicious. :lol

Part of me still thinks he is the Mandarin and not that boring lava dude yelling "I'm Smaug, here me roar!"

But this whole twist is not my main problem with the movie anyways, yes I enjoy reading Faraci (thanks for posting, of course I had read it already), but for me personally I think he got it wrong this time. :nana:

He's allowing his unconditional love for Shane Black to cloud his judgement, sure some would say he's not, but I think so.

I don't know, maybe i'm not sophisticated enough to "get" movies like this but I would be lying to myself if I said that I didn't walk away from this disappointed, like I did with TDKR.

Oh well, lets see where Stark's big epiphany at the end takes us.

But it sure was lazy and sloppy arriving to that epiphany, minus Trevor of course. :lol

As biojex and others said before it would be an even bigger twist if mandarin just gave a devilish smile to the cameras at the end of the movie. Then when the screen cuts black you hear "tony stark. Ready for another lesson". Ah well. Got what we got.

Yeah, I too was hoping and waiting for the "reverse twist" for the rest of the movie, it almost made me lose focus on the rest of the movie. I would much rather see Kingsley revered as one of the great onacreen villains like Doc Ock, Loki or Joker than as the hilarious Trevor. Alas... I still find enjoyment in it....and can't wait for the gifs :lol

So Kevin Feige has said this as advice to DC on the Justice League movie.
I don’t know. I’m sure they have smart people over there who have a plan and know what they’re doing. Man of Steel looks like it’s going to be awesome and obviously Dark Knight is awesome. I don’t know. It’s what I say all the time and have said over the years, which is, have confidence in the characters, believe in the source material, don’t be afraid to stay true to all of the elements of the characters no matter how seemingly silly or crazy they are. I don’t know, I think the Marvel characters have a bit of a leg up for all the reasons that Marvel fans are aware of in terms of the emotional complexity of the characters and the flawed nature of the characters. Those are obviously the elements we want to accentuate amongst all the action.

Come to think of it, Trevor said they did plastic surgery on him. Plastic surgery for what exactly? To look like the REAL Mandarim perhaps? I wish.

this movie was about tony's personal demons and his attempt to live with it all. better yet, to overcome them. didn't you wonder why he was on the couch with banner sleeping at the end and narrated throughout? the entire story was his opening up about the events of new york and how they changed him. this movie was a stark character study, how he tried to get past new york, and how those events changed and shaped his future. brilliant.

The whole trilogy is about that. They make up new demons each movie. Next movie is globophobia.

The Mandarin is not useable as a villian again. The shame of it is there was the hint of the Ten Rings in the first film.

Kevin Feige: "...have confidence in the characters, believe in the source material, don’t be afraid to stay true to all of the elements of the characters no matter how seemingly silly or crazy they are...."

.

I sill believe Mandarin can be salvaged.

But were or when is the question.

Avengers 2, doubt it.

Cap 2, Thor 2, nope.

So IM4?

Hmm, probably not.

Crap, you're right. :slap
