Grails are an interesting thing. When I got into the Sideshow game, Grails were considered pieces that people were dying to have in their collections and that were constantly being quested for. For example, The Doctor Doom PF Exclusive has always been one of my grails because I'm dying to have that piece. In modern times though which sounds funny to say because SSC isn't exactly ancient, Grail has taken the term to mean something that goes through the roof on the secondary market and becomes more of an investment for dividends on the return than anything else which is why people are constantly referring to HT Hicks or Patient Zero as grails and ironically Doom as well as the Hulks, etc have become those kind of grails as well....

The hype on the term "grail" has become common around the board. Everyone gets excited when a new nice looking piece is revealed and you hear the term mentioned.

It's hard to predict this stuff. Honestly, there are pieces mentioned as grails that are not that nice looking but people go nuts over them. They are called grails but they are really just ebay market fluctuations. Spidey PF, Spidey 1:1, etc.

a less than one day sellout could signify potential grail. so does positive hype about an item with an exclusive of 500 or less. iron spider-man could have both and only time will tell. no one formula can produce a grail and it's all speculation. it doesn't hurt that it sold out right away though. i'm guessing the price for the ex. won't go down, for sure.

There are major differences in the terminology.

Grail = Item that people will want in their collection to stay there, a vital piece whether or not the figure is worth anything is one that people think is worth or they think that a collection isn't complete without them. There isn't a monetary value connection but a collector connection mostly. A kind of "It'd be the last thing I'd sell" kind of standpoint.

Cash Cow = This is how people are using the term incorrectly, this is where Sell Outs and eBay auctions, etc factor in. These are hot pieces that really are more investments than anything else and collectors look to these to fund other purchases, the good ol' Capitalist system at work. This is where you monitor the prices because it might be nice to have in your collection but then you would easily sell it if the price got too tempting.

Grails are subjective and individualized with usually a smaller group of people connected to it. Cash Cows are global and should be run like stocks in all reality with speculation and estimations. Sometimes they intervene with one another but in all reality they are two different beasts. Many of the so called "Grails" especially in the Marvel line are both but then you have items like Patient Zero for example which is clearly a Cash Cow to most because many who are really into The Dead line have no problem being without.

Grail is a term that is now thrown around too loosely IMO. To me it is a piece that is virtually impossible to obtain and not on every second page of eBay.

For me this piece would be Bowen's Bronze Boba Fett. Not because of it's price but because no one wants to let it go, it's that good.

:horror

You could pretty much apply this to a good majority of all SSC pieces.

I think most statue collectors use the term grail to mean "something they really want, that sells for above retail".
