Isn't it time for a new age of sci-fi robots?

actually terminator and robocop are both outdated models. they rely more on ammo than anything else. robocop cant even run. he walks veeery slowly.

go and pick up alita, the anime cameron is considering to turn live action. the robots there can do somersault/kungfu, transform her/his legs into wheels and just speed off like bullets. termie and robo won't last 2 seconds with alita.

and there's astro boy out soon, the grand daddy of all fighting flying cyborgs.

The sad part is the most original robot in recent history was WALL-E.

Riiight..

If Hollywood came out with a new LEAD (humanoid) robot it would just be compared to the more famous leads, Terminator or Robocop. Those two are classics which is exactly why they've stood the test of time.

Anything else that follws will be compared to them. Unless they can be topped, dont bother trying. If you think of a bad robot, you think of Terminator. If you think of good robot you think of Robocop.
this is how i feel about it. yes we really need something new on screen and no more remakes, but i know 100% that everyone will compare it to stuff from the past and either say its loosely based or a complete ripoff of those.

That's the problem, civilization is in a weird, weird zone right now. It's like we've reached a cultural peak and we either need to free the new ideas that might be brewing up unconsciously, or, we are nearing our end as every civilization meets its end. We have our icons now and it's hard to think about going above and beyond them.

There's the canon of robots, the canon of Aliens, the canon of horror icons and dramatic actors. Admittedly, there doesn't seem to be any new humphrey bogarts or james cagneys coming along. No new Jason or Freddy, no new Alien or Predator or even Gremlins for chrissake. It's like the only thing we can imagine is a re-imagining of the old.

Also, I think it's kind of a dead end to keep poking at hollywood since their imaginary is probably in the same deadlock we are in. It's hard to imagine something truly new emerging again. Since electronic music in general emerged, there hasn't been any musical event comparable. We had jazz, rock, punk and hip hop. It's hard to imagine something emerging that is completely different from those things and just as eternal, we can only imagine combinations of those things.

WOW!!! Excelent Post!!!! :clap:clap

I agree with that.. Seems we are at an end and nothign new is coming. Every cool movie coming out in the next 5 years is based on something someone created already.

Heck.. the only new tech out deals with the cell phone. Big deal. Maybe the 2012 thing is real!?!?! :angelsmil

As soon as someone comes out with something like that everyone will cry "terminator Copycat!" people say they want different but then they just say its copying more of the same.
what you described is terminator. It will look like a cheap imitation.
I was actually thinking of why people cant think of anything cooler than Terminator or Robocop - it's cos they share those bad-ass robot killers with guns with human bits charactersitics.

you know i think the most positive and rational way of looking at it while still being realistic about the weird time we're in, is that there are often periods of stagnation. The only thing is that I can't think of anything where there have been deadlocks all around. Sure there were musical deadlocks, but film was flourishing. Film deadlocks but music flourishing. Right now the problem is that it seems almost universal. I live in South Korea, same friggin problems as back home. Nothing really new is emerging and if it is memorable, it is only in the ways that it recombines old elements. But maybe this IS something new and we just haven't learned how to embrace it. But then again its still hard to imagine something like Rock n Roll emerging, something that would just blow everyone away, change the world and make a mark in history.

Take Thirst for example, a GREAT korean vampire movie that I recommend EVERYONE try and see at some point soon. Probably the BEST vampire movie I've ever seen. But the thing is, it nontheless it's never going to be, despite how awesome my modern sensibility is to it, old school Dracula classics which were obviously shot much worse, much cheesier, less gore, etc. That's the weird thing, even if its awesome like TDK, I can't truly imagine it being canonized in the same way that old Cagney films are for instance, or Hitchcock. It might not even be the films either, it might just be the state of mind of a modern globalized world. Maybe its not that culture is at a deadlock but human consciousness.

Anyways its super late and I have five classes of screaming korean children to teach tomorrow. end of rant.

good point. but don't worry, humanity still has some new stuff up its collective sleeves. after all, just a few short decades ago, the internet did not exist. now, it's utterly unimaginable that we ever got by without the net! :horror

i have a feeling james cameron's avatar will introduce some new creature/tech design that, if not downright iconic, will at least be highly distinctive and memorable. after all, this is the guy who (with stan winston) gave us the terminators...

but things have always been that way. great minds, in any fields(science, philosophy, art, etc), come only once in a blue moon. same with movies. new ideas are never quick to come by. for every predator and alien and terminator, there were tons of crappy creations back then too.

film is still a relatively new art form. it's been around less than 100 years. just the age of one generation. who knows what your sons or grandsons will show us. relax, it may take time but new and even better creations will be made.

yup, came around to this in the post I made after the doomier one. even though there is a sort of stagnant air about, it can only mean something new coming along will make that greater of an effect. I guess that's an oxymoron since the new implies there was an old before it, which i guess is by definition stagnant.
