Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

I cannot wait for this movie. I am avoiding all extra clips other than the trailer or commercials....did read the 4 issue comic Countdown that leads into the movie. Gives good back story to the characters

So, is Countdown worth buying? I saw that the graphic novel collecting all four issues recently came out. I was thinking about buying it and reading it before the movie comes out.

I haven't read it yet, but I plan to. Impressions I've heard so far is about half like it, half hate it, but all agree that it is 100% fanwank.

I picked that compliation issue of "Countdown"...and yes, I was really resisting this movie but now I'm ready to see it. Those advance screenings had a lot of good buzz so....but so did Cloverfield and that ended up being 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back so...we'll just have to wait and see....the other thing putting on the breaks a bit for me is that Harry Knowles really liked it and aren't his raves like the kiss of death anymore?

I highly recommend that comic to anyone interested in seeing the movie...it's not necessarily "required reading" and hasn't much to do with the film other than providing a little backstory for the new movie's bad guy, but it does get one back in the "Trek" mood by giving some of the "Next Generation" crew a nice chance to shine...a way-better send-off than that dreary "Nemesis" movie was...and if that's "fanwank", well, that's not necessarily a bad thing is it?

Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

I need to get that TPB myself as well...

As for the clips, it looks great so far. And I wish I could have been in Texas at that screening, what a great trick. :lol

At least I get to finally meet Nimoy this Saturday at the FX con, get an autograph and congratulate him on the positive buzz.

And from that one clip, Urban has Mccoy NAILED! That was perfect delivery, felt like the Bones I know and love. And Spock's emotionality is a nice touch, as the others have said... those early episodes of ST TOS had Spock smirking and shouting, still trying to get a handle on his emotions (or rather Nimoy getting a handle on the character as well).

I'm glad the buzz is so good, gives me a lot of hope for this movie. I'm very excited about seeing it in a few weeks, and just happy to see Trek popular again.

Re: J.J. Abrams' Star Trek

I'm adding a spoiler tag to the thread title as we discuss things (like the prequel comic) that have been released but some might still be avoiding.

I would say read Countdown if for no other reason that to know:

Character motivations

What kind of ship the 'bad guys' have

What the heck they are doing in the 23rd Century

Why does Spock have white hair? (he's realllyyyyyyyyy old now - like Sarek TNG old)

I read the synopsis for Countdown online and
it's interesting how some things relate to the All Good Things... future. But I see Picard went against Kirk's advice and left the chair of the Enterprise. I kinda wish they would do one last TNG movie and tie some things up. Still pumped for this one though!

I feel the same way! Can't wait to see this movie! :banana:banana:banana

love the music they used in the trailer. sure, it's very batman begins/dark knight, but it gave me a feeling there's a chance that this movie might be something special.

hope they use that music in the movie.

also, agree abt karl urban as bones. his delivery is spot on!

not sold on quinto yet. he's got the look, but something abt his voice and the way he speaks just bugs me.

The music from the trailers are done by a music company that specializes in movie trailer music, so it won't be in the movie.

Check out the official site for the movie. the music they're using on the main page is from the movie. It's just one sample, but some early reviews are singling out the score as being a good one.

Also check out the clip "Answer Me" (under the videos section) to get a better feel for how Quinto is acting. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The site is standard movie-tie-in fare, but done with style. Check out the photo spread too...the one that caught my eye and made me smile was of Urban on the bridge with the exact same body posture and pose De Kelly used to strike in that position....looks like Karl did his homework. Very cool...

I'd like to know if Hot Toys will be doing 1/6.

They're distributing the Terminator and Star Trek toys from Playmates.

If this movie kicks ass I sure as hell will want some figures, but I sure as hell won't touch the Playmates ones!

yeah i read abt that, but i was still hoping they'd use it in the movie anyway.

michael giacchino's score should be solid tho. i love the work he's done on lost. excellent stuff.
