Titanic made 1.8 billion in '97 right?

According to boxofficemojo, the average ticket price in '97 was $4.59, today the average is $7.18. Also the price for IMAX and 3D movies is more than that.

So is Avatar actually as popular is the numbers are saying, or does it just look that way cause ????s so expensive now?

Adjusted for inflation I wonder where Avatar ranks.

Good question. Also theatres charge more for 3D and IMAX tickets - so it has the advantage over other current releases too.

Here is an adjusted for inflation list:

I know a lot of people use that to say Titanic isn't really number one all time, but people had much less options entertainment wise when most of those older movies were released.

Looks like it passed up Dark Knight for World wide and estimated at $68 million domestic this weekend. This movie will definitely be #2 world wide.

:horror:horror:horror its only been 17 days and its already made 1 billion!!!!!!!!!! In your face naysayers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can i go to pandora now.....:monkey2

3D does cost more. You pay a premium for the glasses. Yet people are STILL going and paying.

Pretty impressive for Cameron. That's gonne be kinda cool for him to maybe end up with the top two highest grossing worldwide movies of all time lol

I never understood why they don't go by ticket sales instead of $. Seems like that would be the fairest way to judge a movies popularity.

Over a $billion in under 3 weeks!! :clap

It has made more than the Dark Knight did in its entire run in 17 days!!!

Will Def. secure 2nd all time and has an outside chance to creep up to Titanic....

I bet you even the biggest optimist would not have predicted how successful this movie was going to end up. Kudos James, hopefully this leads to more high quality sci-fi stuff in the near future ( ala Avatar, District 9 and Star Trek)

Actually I think lightwave initially predicted this would be #1 all time.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

Saw it today with the wife in 3D. While it's not exactly the 2nd coming of "Gone With The Wind", it was a very well done movie, technically amazing with spectacular visuals and very immersive 3D. I would equate it to a simple, enjoyable fable in a book with a beautiful cover.

Unfortunately, movie production companies like 20th Century only care about one thing after they release a movie...$$$. That's just the way it is.
I wouldn't call a movie like Transformers 2 popular, but it made just over 800million worldwide. Whether Paramount like the movie or not is not of their concern. As long as it makes a pile of money, that's all they worry about.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

Just watched it in IMAX 3D. My wife wasn't feeling great and just closed her eyes for pretty much the last half of the movie :(
I personally had dry eye syndrome I think I forgot to blink the first 30min :D Took me maybe an hour until I really did not have to consciously focus on any particular item to see 3D so the latter half of the movie was amazingly immersive! The graphics and 3D were very believable and did not feel like CGI but almost like a documentary so to me the effects were amazing. The story line was good, kinda done before but I think the visuals and 3D made it a must watch in 3D!! Too bad I will never be able to see it the same way again (without going to IMAX again)

I understand that money is the bottom line but when these rankings come out it would be nice if everyone was on an even playing field.

Is Lightwave still around now that this movie has come out and is doing phenomenal? Or is his work done here? :D

I finally saw this movie today... and yes, I'm a convert too. I really liked it. Bravo, Cameron, you've done it again. :clap
