I also just thought of the reason why I think the Aliens look fake to me and why I just don't buy it as life like. Again Im not hating I am just saying why they don't look real to me.

Take the Alien and Predator movies. I can buy into the Predator. It looks like a real breathing creature! It seriously looks like that thing exists in the movies.

Now the Navi, look like a video game character to me. Why? I don't know. Maybe it is that they are all CG.

So that begs the old arguement that many have brought up. You know the one that says that you know it's CG so your brain tells you it isn't real and all that. Well my brain knows it's a guy in a predator suit and it looks real! Does that make any sense?

The same can be said for the Klingons in ST. I know they aren't real but they look real to me. I guess I am just a fan of traditional makeup. I just don't think we are at the point that CG can be passed for the real thing.

Sure the screenshots look fantastic! They look almost lifelike. However, the second they start to move you know it's CG. I just can't put my finger on it. :dunno

Well, the thing is, the Predator and Klingons you spoke of are real, what you saw actually existed for them to film. And you know that, so there's nothing to doubt. But these, they are obviously not real in any way, there's no way you can't know that so they look fake.

But from the magazine scans I'm seeing, the characters look very lively, I'm very eager to see this.

What? :dunno

So the Predator is real?!? :horror If that's the case I am sleeping under my covers tonight. :D

Not the actual alien, but what you were able to see was real, since it was an actual person in a costume, he was physically there, but not some predator from outer space with no concern for human life.

Just my 2 cents...
I see Badmoon's point here...
The closest thing to a "real" Navi would be something like Abe Sapien...
but in HB you know and feel that Abe Sapien exists...

That's the thing, CGI as good as it is, is still noticeable...
For example, in the Avatar Trailer, maybe it's the fact that it looks too nice and clean...
that's the problem with the PT, it looked like virtual stages and costumes,
not real worn down like the OT...

Blending CGI with reality is still tricky...
but doable, I think in that department Peter Jackson is ahead of Cameron...
In LOTR and King Kong, and even Blomkamp accomplished it in District-9...

Regardless, I'm sure the movie experience will be amazing,
and groundbreaking, and I can't wait to see it in full IMAX glory!! :rock

I thought the CGI in Kong was really bad at times. You could easily tell when the blue screen was in use.

Yeah, maybe it will somehow look better in 3-D, but these look very unrealistic to me. Like Kuzeh says, it looks like those aliens in the prequel trilogy. CG hasn't yet advanced to the point where a film can have completely CG creatures seamlessly acting with real ones and looking real.

Have you not seen the EMPIRE magazine shots? This is the best seamless CG, or CG interaction thats ever been done. And it def crosses the uncanny valley

I think it's a combination of both the color pallet and their appearance that's making them appear unrealistic. Their face proportions are closer to animated characters so when we look at them, our memories immediately associate them with unrealistic animated characters. The colors of both their faces and eyes are so bright that the animated association is even stronger.
I hope once we get into the story, we look past the association and start seeing them in a different light.

They are beautiful! But have you seen various video game stills that look equally as impressive? I have. The difference is once you add motion to those screen shots they never look as good.

I would say Bad is wrong when he says it looks like a video game. Because thats just silly.

However, I get is issue. The Predator is a guy in a suit. They couldnt do the Na'vi by using make up, or suits. Its the eyes. The eyes are so different from ours that in our minds we go "Not real. CGI"...but what Jimbo is going for, isnt the greatest CGI renders, but more along the lines of, the greatest CGI proformence. Like in Beowulf, how the characters, while good, lacked any real emotion...Avatar will change this....the Na'vi looked real, they acted real. it worked.

No you havent.

I'm sorry to be a ^^^^ here, but this video game crap is silly.

You have never seen the video game screen grabs from video games in magazines? I am talking about the ones that are all nice and photoshopped and used to gauge interest. Um...yeah I have. I have been playing games since 1984. When I wasn't even old enough to understand what I was doing.

You can also say it's silly but people aren't just saying that on here either. You can even find comments on CNN.

That said I don't give a ^^^^ what anyone else says. Unless you have my eyes surgically implanted in your head than you will never no what I see will you? I am giving you my opinion.

And thats fine. But I still think it's wrong to compare this to a video game.

Thats my opinion. Compare it to freaking Dragonball Evolution if you will....but I have never seen a game as good looking as Avatar.

Thats my opinion blah blah ^^^^ blah. :D

I am not talking about sitting down with a controller in your hand and seeing what you see on TV. Maybe you think that's what I mean. :dunno
