Not a specific religion exclusively but it does have Biblical themes.

I'm not convinced that Tsu Tey was prepared to defer to Jake's leadership permanently. It made sense for Jake to lead the attack against the humans but like the assistance of his new beastie, it would have most likely dissolved after the fight.

A perfectly valid interpretation. I like that its kind of like Total Recall (with regard to whether the whole movie was a dream or not) in that there really is enough evidence to make a strong case either way (in Avatar's case whether or not Ewya is biological or supernatural.) Hopefully Cameron doesn't spell it all out in upcoming commentaries, but I assume he will.

I can go with that. I still think that Ewya specifically wanted Jake in charge, so in addition to battling the humans she did kind of pull the rug from under Tsu Tey.

Good reply Khev, i think we both made our different interpretations clear.

I bought the blu-ray today by the way.

So what movie do you think is the "best" of all time?

Because time, mood, age and experience all affect taste I never really settle on ONE all-time best film personally. But here is my current Top 10:

Casablanca
The Elephant Man
The Seven Samurai
Lawrence of Arabia
Ran
Jaws
The Shawshank Redemption
Modern Times
The Godfather Part II
Raiders of the Lost Ark

I'm sure most would agree that that's a great list of films. Now are those your personal favorites or just the films that you consider to be the "best?"

Either way I'm sure you realize that it would be just as easy to take issue with you ranking The Shawshank Redemption and Raiders over Citizen Kane, Bridge on the River Kwai, Ben Hur, etc, just as you do against those who hold Avatar in high regard.

I don't recall anyone here saying Avatar is THE best single movie, but off the top of my head I'd probably squeeze it into the bottom half of my top ten all time favorites.

As I said, my list fluctuates. It just so happens that those 3 films you mentioned do pop on there from time-to-time, as do a few others. Really, you'd need a list of about 25 or so films for a more accurate representation of what you think are the "best".

But I have to say... and this is not to take issue with those who do think it's worthy or to start any debates (this is all opinion)... if I had a list of the Best 50 movies of all time, AVATAR still wouldn't make it. As I've said before in this very thread, I don't even think it's as good as either THE ABYSS or ALIENS.

As a David Lean fan I would rate LoA, Doctor Zhivago and Passage to India over Bridge on the River Kwai.

It may make 99 out of 100 on my list. :lecture And I do mean MAY.

Yeah. There's just so many good movies that have been made.

I don't know why anyone would want to take issue with that. Like I said, there are so many great films that have been made, even ranking Avatar at #51 is actually very high praise. Cameron messed up the ending to The Abyss too much for me to put it above any of his other films but Aliens is another one of my favorites. I'm sure it and Avatar will trade top spots (among JC films) many times going forward depending on my mood.

That's a good example of just how gifted a filmmaker he was. There is only a small handful of directors that would have multiple competing films of their own in my Top 10-20:

David Lean
Akira Kurosawa
Steven Spielberg
Charlie Chaplin
Alfred Hitchcock
Martin Scorsese
Stanley Kubrick

My personal "movie DNA" was heavily influenced and made up by the top work of the fellows on that list, and they set the standards by which I judge pretty much all other filmmakers/films.
